My best friend called yesterday, said she had a bad cold, a little fever. I told her that you don’t get fever with a cold. I asked how she caught it: Her husband. I asked how he caught it. He stopped wearing a mask 🤦🏻‍♀️. She’s none too happy with him. Both are well-informed progressives. I insisted they get COVID tests.

Guess what. Yep.

To quote my friend, “We sure learned our lesson.” 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ She thanked me profusely. Their dr. told them to quarantine, said their vax helped enormously.

@GottaLaff You probably need to schedule this as a daily reminder for the next few weeks. It’s like watching dominos fall.
@GottaLaff Why I'm still single and Hermit. This is not why we get shots...to placate our spouse's stupidity and lack of resolve. Weak people leaning on weaker people.IMHO #Masks

@GottaLaff
I'm so sorry about your friend.
Hopefully well-informed progressives will get the message. Keep wearing #masks!

@GottaLaff I had it a few weeks ago. I can’t recommend Paxlovid enough. I felt 100% better overnight after I started it.
@GottaLaff
Fever is a common symptom of rhinoviruses or common cold. But these days, it's insane to think that ANY illness is "just a cold" without testing. Your insistence that they take tests may be saving lives :)
@W6KME Generally you get fever with flu vs colds. You can get fever with a cold but less likely. Sure sign of flu or COVID though.

@GottaLaff This is true if we use the typical layperson definition of a flu being something with a fever, which is fine. This has no relationship to the science...people use the word flu wrongly almost all the time. It means influenza. And common colds are properly called rhinoviruses, with which fevers are indeed a very common symptom.

It's important to keep these ideas (science vs. common misuse) separate.

@W6KME @GottaLaff Exactly this. It is incorrect to say fevers do not occur with colds. *High* fever is uncommon with rhinoviruses and the like, but mild fever is common (tho not universal).

Incidentally, fever is not a guarantee with COVID. Some folks get fever, some don’t.

@W6KME @GottaLaff the "common cold" (some varieties, anyway) is also a coronavirus, so no surprise there.

@GottaLaff had a friend tell me, after they got it at a concert where they weren't vigilant about masking, that "everyone is gonna get it eventually".

Even if that was the case, I'd like to wait for a less harmful strain, or an even more effective vaccine.

Is that just how we rationalize getting sick because our government has had the WORST messaging possible on this issue?

Either way, I have 2 autoimmune disorders I DO NOT NEED MORE.

@GottaLaff Thank you for sharing these cases.
@GottaLaff I just got it a few days ago after avoiding it for almost 3 years. I never stopped wearing a mask when I went shopping or rode transit, but I started eating in restaurants and walked around in the ferry building without a mask.
@GottaLaff @mikec415 I’ve locked down, don’t eat at restaurants and any time we go out it’s masks on. Still haven’t gotten it yet.
it’s invidious. Let your guard down for an instance and it gets. you.
@cenobyte @GottaLaff I got the latest booster and flu shot in September so I started letting my guard down.
@cenobyte @GottaLaff @mikec415 It's a weird one, though. I have a friend who has been MUCH more careful than we have and she's gotten it and we haven't. I guess it's just a being at the wrong place at the wrong time kind of thing.
