Folx inability to look past the well manicured public persona has ONLY elevated this particular mediocre, unremarkable white tech dude and for the first time we’re seeing that all the fawning was unmerited

This is why titles like “liberal” mean nothing to me…what’s the behavior

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/dec/21/elon-musk-liberal-twitter-plans-benevolent

Elon Musk was never a liberal, and his plans for Twitter were never benevolent

Tech barons’ lip-service to democracy and pluralism was always conditional on preserving their own positions at the top

The Guardian
“From a democratic perspective, it’s highly problematic that tech oligarchs like Musk are amassing so much power and influence. They are not democratically controlled in any way or guided by any concern for the public good. Musk is yet another example of how short the path from a certain kind of libertarianism to the far right is, a reminder that this type of libertarianism is driven by a desire for freedom from regulation and criticism of any kind.”
“Much of the moral panic over “cancel culture” – which animated Musk to buy Twitter in the first place – is a reaction to the fact that traditionally marginalized groups gained technological means to affect the political debate.”

@KimCrayton1 what I've often seen is people being upset that "cancel culture" is actually more of a culture of accountability
They've never had to be accountable for their actions, so now that they are, it's upsetting

And I say - "get some"

@ShmosKnows @KimCrayton1 it’s the same stuff they railed against when it was called “politically correct”, IE their right to be an asshole because they have more power
@KimCrayton1 They claim to be okay with free speech but in reality...
@Rachel_Wales @KimCrayton1
"Okay, free speech, then" -- all of us
"no, not like that" -- all the old ruling classes unaccustomed to being told "no"

@KimCrayton1 This is very similar to something I was talking about earlier today, that attracted some derision. (and some support) This is a part of an ongoing debate about "quote tweets" (or "quote boosts") that has been exhausting my energy and I could use some help. #blackmastodon

"It's not even about if quote-boost is implemented or not. (Maybe it's too difficult to implement. Maybe there are more pressing issues.) It's about the assumptions implied by these discussions. It's about what it means when someone hears 'well the devs decided not to implement that because it leads to toxic interactions' and we are talking about a feature that is synonymous with so-called 'call out culture.' " Part of my response to a dev-thread about quote boost. https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/14597#issuecomment-1362907651

@KimCrayton1 "Cancel Culture" is going to be one of those phrases at least as notorious as "Death Tax" and "Climate Change" dreamed up by Frank Luntz and his successors.

Where estate taxes and ecological catastrophe were what Frank wanted (consecutively) to scare us with, or put a fig-leaf over, the term "Cancel Culture" is intended to shape how we talk about people questioning the narrative.

Anyone need two tries to guess what was intended?

@KimCrayton1 And much of the moral panic is people not liking to be called out over misbehavior.
@KimCrayton1 To a large extent, ‘cancel culture’ is just a democratisation of the ability to hold someone accountable.
@KimCrayton1 Jokes on him, as that $44 billion purchase cost him $100 billion...
@toxtethogrady @KimCrayton1 the skeptic in me believes his devaluation of Twitter and Tesla will benefit him and his billionaire cronies somehow in the long run. Otherwise, wtf?!?
@DangerousFruit @KimCrayton1 That had better be a powerful "long run" to be worth losing $125 billion and all sorts of credibility...
@KimCrayton1 Twitter was one place where those with money, political power and influence actually were exposed to those who have none of these things and able to realize they were people, worthy of respect, worthy of being heard just like themselves. It was a place of conflictive jostling seas but it did offer some equality until it was no longer free for everyone. Once it costed money it lost its purpose and became yet another wealthy people only space.
@KimCrayton1 Musk bought twitter--he consummated the sale--at the point his text messages with other titans of tech were being made public in the hearings around the sale. Musk did a 180º turn -- those text messages could not be allowed to see the light of day.

@KimCrayton1: "How dare those people whom we in the Self-Selected High Society(tm) have been carefully and systematically depriving of social powers suddenly develop some social powers by wielding technomagical power instead? Witchcraft!"

@KimCrayton1 And, as usual, German conservatives are regurgitating those "cancel culture" talking points as well. 😡
@KimCrayton1 it's a lot more important building cars and rockets then being the world's biggest racist
@KimCrayton1 i never thought about it like this before, but what you said makes so much sense!
