I should leave this thread for the night. It's a bit late here in Australia and I should be in bed. Will share a few more in the days to come :)

Final batch here with a focus on some of the lovely birds you'll find on Norfolk Island.

Continuing my set of pics from Norfolk Island today. Landscapes are a challenge in terms of waiting for the right light, but catching birds on the island is a bit more work.

Every time we'd find a nice little patch of forest for a walk, there'd be a Piwa come join us. They watch to see if our feet kick up any bugs they can snack on. Lots of friendly Piwa on the island :)

If you don't like coastline, then you won't like Norfolk Island a whole heap :)

These fellas get a bad wrap on Norfolk Island. The locals say they're not really from here, and now there's too many of them.

Would be ironic to point out the not so distant history of how the "locals" came to live in Norfolk Island I suppose?

What's really special about visiting a small island in the middle of the ocean, is the angle of the light. Provided the clouds don't get in the way, you have seriously low angled sun to work with. That's my jam.

Well, that and a little f/2 action of course.

What I love about drone work is getting an angle that I otherwise cannot physically reach. Sometimes that's just a meters over the edge of a cliff, or sometimes it's 50m down the hill where there's no trail.

I bought some very nice variable ND filters for my Mavic Pro 2 which let me slow down the shutter, just like you normally would when shooting a waterfall.

So I shot some waterfalls too!

@ewen A friend of mine says he treats his drone as an aerial tripod for inaccessible shots, just like you. I've been sorely tempted..

@stevenlawson

There's a tonne of restrictions to fly, especially in national parks where all the best scenery is!But every now and then you get a shot that's really unique.

The laws for flying are getting much better though, and easier to comply with. I just finished an online registration so I can legally fly in Norway for example. Not expensive.

Keep your feet on the ground, but shoot for the stars!

@ewen Drone photography really appeals to the curious side of my nature, being able to see things from such a different perspective. My friend is fully licensed, it seems quite a complicated process but worth the effort to get more access. Your shots are great, BTW!

@stevenlawson

When I first started in Australia I needed to get an RePL to fly. Expensive but also good training. Now that's all changed here, with easier ways to achieve compliance and get flying. Not sure what the UK is like.

Europe has very simple rules in place now too, similar to Australia. Anyone can do it. Bigger hurdle is shopping for a drone! The market is a little confusing.

@stevenlawson

What most people overlook is the panoramic features of a drone. A 20MP sensor can yield a 40MP image with a little extra work. (I keep the RAW files and assemble myself).

Now you have a landscape lens that is flexible and detailed. An Air 2S for example is super super easy to fly compared to a larger Mavic.

I pretty much learned to fly in the Arctic, but the GPS signal on the little drones would fail a lot, often with catastrophic results!

Anyway, panos are a peach!

@ewen wow nice!
