If I could steal ONE feature from the bird app to give to Mastodon, it would be to add Google translate. I hate missing out on toots from non-English speakers. Yeah, I can technically run them through manually, but that's an extra step added onto every single toot, and it may not even be something I'm interested in.
@NekoAlice isn’t mastodon open source? Don’t know squat about computer stuff myself, lol, but I wonder, wouldn’t that mean it could be possible for anyone who with the know how to go into the code and add such a feature?
@samusaran311 It's definitely possible, from a technical standpoint. But I think there's probably legal barriers. I don't imagine Google lets just *any* developer use their API for free. Twitter probably licensed it.
@NekoAlice
Fedilab has a translate option. It doesn't translate hash tags but it does translate the rest of the text.

Hello @NekoAlice

I think it depends on the instance and app.

eg. I use the web app on Chrome (Android)
on mastodon.social

Depending on the setting I use and the poster uses, the translate button will show on posts in other langiages.

It is wonderful.

(Yes, alternatively, it is extra work, when people don't have the settings for posts I can select the text and select translate from the browser.)

Hope this helps
