Side note: one of the first options that I considered for a new Fedi home was just to fork out the money for my own managed instance (my internet isn't good enough to set up my own server). That would be more tempting if my insurance weren't going up next year and I wasn't already financially tight.

But then I realized how much bullshit I'd have to deal with even as a moderator of a single-user instance.

@DDimetrodon If it's your own instance, then you could just turn sign ups off and that should get rid of most of the moderation responsibilities tbh
@jyden True, but I imagine there'd still be drama. -_-
@DDimetrodon What sort of drama are you picturing?
If you don't like an instance you can block it and be done.
Meanwhile, for someone to not federate with you, they'd have to not like you specifically.
And that would get you banned on any instance you don't host anyway
@jyden And the kneejerk impulse to block an impulse and be done is one of my main complaints today about Mastodon.
@DDimetrodon Yeah, but you said earlier you were ok with blocking an instance if it was just you
