Side note: one of the first options that I considered for a new Fedi home was just to fork out the money for my own managed instance (my internet isn't good enough to set up my own server). That would be more tempting if my insurance weren't going up next year and I wasn't already financially tight.

But then I realized how much bullshit I'd have to deal with even as a moderator of a single-user instance.

@DDimetrodon If it's your own instance, then you could just turn sign ups off and that should get rid of most of the moderation responsibilities tbh

Actually I think this might be a really good idea!

Single-user instances can be relatively cheap to run. (Although not as cheap as Free, of course.)

You wouldn't have to worry too much about moderation drama -- you just decide for yourself which instances & users you want to moderate, which you already do as an individual user anyway.

Then you could fully federate with aethy, etc, and the rest of the Fediverse too.

@lookitmychicken @jyden Oh, it's a great idea! I just don't have the spare cash for what is effectively pure luxury and can be substituted with free, less-ideal but mostly workable options.

@DDimetrodon https://pleroma.social/ is a lightweight mastodon essentially.
If you can afford hosting, just not the beefiness mastodon itself requires, you can spin up a pleroma instance instead.

@jyden I've heard not good things about pleroma. And drama I'm envisioning is my inbox getting filled with nonsense reporting me to myself because most people aren't going to look that deeply in an account.

@DDimetrodon Pleroma is easier to host, so a lot of not so great people use it, but that doesn't make the service itself bad. That'd be like calling mastodon bad just because there's some pedo servers out there using it.

@jyden The reality is that using pleroma tends to get you extra scrutiny because it's so often used by bad actors.

I appreciate the thoughts, but I am not in a financial position to create an instance at any rate.
