Thank you for confirming what I suspected all along.

An AP investigation has found that authorities used technologies mobilized for COVID-19 for purposes entirely unrelated to the pandemic ā halting travel for activists and ordinary people, harassing marginalized communities and linking peopleās health information to other surveillance and law enforcement tools.⯠In some cases, data was shared with spy agencies #surveillance #pandemic https://apnews.com/article/technology-police-government-surveillance-covid-19-3f3f348d176bc7152a8cb2dbab2e4cc4
@mrsmith If only some folks had warned about the very real potential of these sorts of abuses ahead of time⦠š¤
āOnce this is up and running, there are a lot of people who will want to get their hands on that data eventually. Donāt forget that the type of data collected is the same kind of data that the United States government uses to decide who is and isnāt a terrorist before ordering them killed using drone strikes.ā

Wow, could have knocked me over with feather...
I wrote this nearly three years ago, absolutely confident that governments, bureaucracies and law enforcement would never be able to resist this temptation, given they've never resisted it in the past...

@mrsmith
āAny intervention that increases state power to monitor individuals has a long tail and is a ratcheting system,ā said John Scott-Railton, a senior researcher at the Toronto-based internet watchdog Citizen Lab. āOnce you get it, is very unlikely it will ever go away.ā
Ouch.
@mrsmith I'm really proud of how New Zealand handed this, building an app that stored data locally and only uploaded on specific user interaction.
Having actual security nerds involved made the NZ process much less invasive (and therefore risky both in terms of security and scope creep abuse) than in other countries:

Not that things were perfect, but they were far less invasive than the examples shown in Israel and China.
