Police seize on COVID-19 tech to expand global surveillance

JERUSALEM (AP) — Majd Ramlawi was serving coffee in Jerusalem’s Old City when a chilling text message appeared on his phone.

@mrsmith Many of us were worried that exactly this would happen. Covid-tracking tools implemented without proper safeguards have provided exactly what authoritarians have been trying to do for decades.

@mrsmith

Thank you for confirming what I suspected all along.

@mrsmith . DeSantis must top that list.

@mrsmith Who could have ever seen this one coming!
@mrsmith Here's my shocked Pikachu face

@mrsmith If only some folks had warned about the very real potential of these sorts of abuses ahead of time… šŸ¤”

ā€œOnce this is up and running, there are a lot of people who will want to get their hands on that data eventually. Don’t forget that the type of data collected is the same kind of data that the United States government uses to decide who is and isn’t a terrorist before ordering them killed using drone strikes.ā€

How Apple and Google will cure COVID-19 and how you can opt into it if you want to keep your job

Apple is teaming up with surveillance capitalist Google to track you while respecting your privacy. What could possibly go wrong?

@mrsmith not surprised. china especially seems at the crux of it & can't help but wonder what MAL & GOP have done in cahoots w their model of surveillance. especially with telecoms & possibly underwater Internet cables

@mrsmith
Wow, could have knocked me over with feather...

I wrote this nearly three years ago, absolutely confident that governments, bureaucracies and law enforcement would never be able to resist this temptation, given they've never resisted it in the past...

ā€œAny intervention that increases state power to monitor individuals has a long tail and is a ratcheting system,ā€ said John Scott-Railton, a senior researcher at the Toronto-based internet watchdog Citizen Lab. ā€œOnce you get it, is very unlikely it will ever go away.ā€

Ouch.

@mrsmith you don’t say. I’m just shocked.
@mrsmith Why am I angered but not in the least bit surprised.
@mrsmith This is next level disturbing. Right from the beginning of pandemic, I chose not to activate COVID-19 community tracking that automatically appeared my phone. Seemed too risky for data mining then, now, and in the future.

@mrsmith I'm really proud of how New Zealand handed this, building an app that stored data locally and only uploaded on specific user interaction.

Having actual security nerds involved made the NZ process much less invasive (and therefore risky both in terms of security and scope creep abuse) than in other countries:

Video of the talk: https://youtu.be/IyeDSyvYvZs?t=14094

Not that things were perfect, but they were far less invasive than the examples shown in Israel and China.

@mrsmith oh wow. This gives a whole different insight into the protests in china.
@mrsmith as much as we at ILSR’s Community Broadband Networks team are excited about the significant potential healthcare cost savings and improved health outcomes associated with telemedicine and telehealth, this kind of stuff is really concerning. Appreciate you reporting on this issue
@seanalan thanks for reading. I’m just sharing the good work of my colleagues at AP who reported it: Garance Burke, Joe Federman, Huizhong Wu, Krutika Pathi and Rod McGuirk. I don’t think any of them are on Mastodon (yet!)
@mrsmith key word - yet… I hope
