After the 1/6 insurrection, there was never a proper press conference by the DOJ to assuage public fears—and Merrick Garland is a reluctant communicator, adding to public uncertainty. The Jan 6 committee has played a critical role in keeping the country focused on this unprecedented crime and not letting the liars, the deniers and the emulators sweep it all under the rug.
@StevenBeschloss FYI, I am so afraid that it will all get swept under the rug anyway. After all, rich, powerful, politically connected, mostly white people getting re-elected with no consequences, serving in Congress with no consequences, running for President with no consequences, grifting with no consequences, getting to choose when they turn themselves in or report for a sentencing hearing....well NONE of that ever happens in America...
@StevenBeschloss I’m honestly really confused by this
Garland’s appointment hadn’t been confirmed and he wasn’t in office until March of 2021
By then Biden made public statements that were calming and helpful imho
As the chief LEO what kind of statements could Garland have made before his appointment or during his first weeks on the job that wouldn’t have made this necessary work much harder?
@StevenBeschloss and what possibly could’ve the outgoing leadership have done that wouldn’t have been seen as out of their lane? Again honest questions
@phwolfe940 I was referring to the DOJ before Jan 20. And if you check the record, Garland said promising ideals during his confirmation hearings, but he’s been mostly reluctant. We can give a good reason why, but he’s given plenty of uncertainty to the public and confidence to the insurrectionists they’d never be held accountable.
@StevenBeschloss Thank you. I appreciate that you keep such a close eye on this. It really helps.
@StevenBeschloss I’m STILL waiting on a press conference regarding 1/6 by director Wray. I guess it will be another 84 years.

@StevenBeschloss

My fear is the incoming #republican house majority will undermine the DOJ before the most important court cases begin. Or, even worse, a Republican is elected #President for the next term and pardons them all.

There’s no good outcome unless the #DOJ moves quicker.

@StevenBeschloss At some point you’d think he’d figure out that communication and messaging is the biggest part of that job. The other people do the actual work!
@StevenBeschloss
I do not think a press conference does much, action not words. My impression is that the DOJ has been quiet while the Congressional committee was in action publicly.
Now let’s see what happens, then judge
