Going to be interesting to see how TikTok users interpret this new info https://techcrunch.com/2022/12/20/tiktoks-tell-you-why-a-particular-video-appeared-in-for-you-feed/

@taylorlorenz
When an app tells you to touch grass...
@taylorlorenz erm. Aren't some videos simply going to say something to the effect of "we identified that you are a bit of a pervert".
@taylorlorenz I feel like mine will be : *Reason for appearing: GAY *
@taylorlorenz This is a bit like voluntarily opening up the algorithm? Btw, this is a regulation Iโ€™d like to see of all tech companies. I want transparency, not covert manipulation.
@taylorlorenz Wish Facebook would tell me why people end up on my recommended friends list.

@taylorlorenz It doesn't really, though, at least not in the example. 'Reaons may include' is neither definite nor exhaustive, & there's nothing about the language formulation that promises either.

I.e., they give you some vague ideas why you might have seen that video, but they don't tell you (& probably can't) why you *did*.

@taylorlorenz Finally going to find out why Tiktok thinks I love Paramore.
@realDannyDorko @taylorlorenz Pretty sure tiktok thinks everyone loves Paramore.
@taylorlorenz You know something about the algorithm behind Tiktok?
@taylorlorenz "because we get paid money to show it to you" ๐Ÿ˜‚
@taylorlorenz "Because this had the hashtag #fyp so we were forced to do it! ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ"
@taylorlorenz sometimes ignorance is bliss, though I suppose some transparency into the algorithm is a good thing
@taylorlorenz Nooo! I already know why, I donโ€™t need my inner self spelled out for me. Lol
@taylorlorenz I will be really interested to find out why they send me so many new videos that have low numbers of likes/views.
@taylorlorenz not sure why exactly social companies are against AI transparency when letting a user actively fine-tune the recommendations an algo is making for them is the ultimate training
