I’m fairly new on #Mastodon but one thing I’ve learned is that unlike Twitter, starring ⭐️ a post doesn’t make it more likely to be seen since there’s no algorithm. Reblogging 🔁 is the way to get more people to see the post.

Starring is more like a digital hug and is still welcome.

#TwitterMigration

@davidho I always used starring this way. Gonna continue doing so here.
@Blyfh @davidho As someone exclusively using the "Last tweets" view with pure chronological display on Twitter, I also don't care about the algorithmic role of likes either. I'm suprised of everyone obsessing over the Twitter algorithm when there such a basic way to shun it
@christlet @Blyfh I don’t know if you noticed that Latest Tweet view doesn’t actually show you all the tweets. You’d have to use Tweetdeck to do that. I think that’s the algorithm at work.
@davidho @Blyfh I can't find a source about the "Latest tweets" not showing the tweets of everyone you follow as a normal behavior (unless we're getting into "shadowban" controversies). It might change though https://techcrunch.com/2022/11/30/twitter-recommended-tweets/
TechCrunch is part of the Yahoo family of brands

@christlet @Blyfh @davidho
That's exactly how I did it. So at least that's no different here - for me.
@davidho please fill in the equation, if starring a post is like a digital hug , then reblogging is like ________! #mastadon
@davidho this is useful to know. I used to star things on twitter if it was something I wanted to be able to find again.
@davidho things you favorite can be easily found again under Favorites (in right column of the web app by default.)
@davidho I much prefer this design. My followers may not like what I like & we don’t need to see a ton of random posts based on other people’s likes. Also a like is more private, it lets the person who posted know that you liked it & gives them a little boost without broadcasting to everyone that you liked something. A boost is great for when I think other folks would find value in a post. This site seems to be more about connection than promotion & I appreciate the difference.
@davidho Not just resharing! Commenting on others’ posts makes them available to your followers’ feeds as well as to all users on your followers’ nodes that follow the hashtags in the post. Plus commenting contributes to a culture of mutual engagement.
@davidho I star to bookmark toots.
@davidho I wonder if someone will make a Mastodon client with an option to prioritise starred tweets. I can imagine I might want it if I'm following too many people to always read all their posts.
@davidho i always used likes on Twitter as a "digital hug" saying, I see you, I recognize you, you matter, this matters....
@davidho I thought it was like liking a tweet on twitter. Still not sure since starring feels more like bookmarking the post here
@davidho It all works wonderfully here for me on #mastodon

@davidho

I don't read my entire timeline, but a message with 100+ favs does grab my attention. So I do think that favs actually promote a message.

I don't get why elephants don't fav.

@davidho A lot of people miss it, but there is an algorithm in Mastodon v4 - posts with lots of Boosts & Stars show up in the Explore tab (on the right hand side) on the web interface of lots of instances.

In the official Mastodon mobile apps, the Search tab will show you the most Boosted & Starred posts by default, before you enter any search terms.
