The NYTimes reports that New York Republican Congressman George Santos' resume is a pack of lies...

I can't understand why public figures lie about their past. Eventually, someone is going to check the claims and discover the lies.

I also don't understand how the press can be so slow in confirming candidate's claims. Why didn't the NYTimes write their story *before* Santos was elected? @jayrosen_nyu @jeffjarvis @online-news

New York Republican George Santos’s Résumé Called Into Question

Mr. Santos, a Republican from New York, says he’s the “embodiment of the American dream.” But he seems to have misrepresented a number of his career highlights.

The New York Times
@bobwyman @jayrosen_nyu @jeffjarvis @online-news Biden was elected as president, so... 🤷‍♂️
@bobwyman @jayrosen_nyu @jeffjarvis @online-news
The rest of the world would get shitcanned if we lied on our application, but he will live on Wingnut Welfare
@bobwyman @jayrosen_nyu @jeffjarvis @online-news Or why his Democratic opponent didn’t either. This should be standard practice for campaigns to check out opponents’ resumes. Maybe then candidates wouldn’t “embellish”.

@bobwyman @jayrosen_nyu @jeffjarvis @online-news there's a part of me that wants to say "well nobody expected he would win" but that's of course not true.

He also ran two years ago in 2020. So there were two election cycles where the press dropped the ball!

@bobwyman @jayrosen_nyu @jeffjarvis @online-news On a much smaller scale, we tried to confirm the resumes/qualifications of local candidates. Two out of three dropped out before the ballots were even printed - the third one simply did not budge and cited past (irrelevant) accomplishments.

It took a lawsuit by their opponent (after the election) to confirm the candidate was not qualified. As a result, the election was annulled by the court.

@bobwyman @jayrosen_nyu @jeffjarvis @online-news all of this is relevant but I just gotta say in the environment in which the GOP can run a candidate that says fuck elections fuck the constitution I won appoint me the popular vote is rigged and still gets 49.999% of the vote wtf is oppo research supposed to do
@bobwyman @jayrosen_nyu @jeffjarvis @online-news The NYT didn't write about this before the election because they want Republicans to get elected.
@bobwyman @jayrosen_nyu @jeffjarvis @online-news Incredible that this story/information is only discovered after the election.
@bobwyman @jayrosen_nyu @jeffjarvis @online-news I’d like to know the answer to that question myself. This whole “both sides” 🐎 💩 has got to stop. This is not balanced journalism, this is not taking risks. Most of the #MSM has their head up their behind.
@Porpentina2017 @bobwyman @jayrosen_nyu @jeffjarvis @online-news When I was younger, (and before the internet) I used to think that if a piece was in the NYT, it was unimpeachable. What they’ve become is now personally embarrassing for me.

@jeffjarvis @online-news @bobwyman @jayrosen_nyu “Why didn't the NYTimes write their story *before* Santos was elected?”

Assumes basic journalistic competence not in evidence.

@jeffjarvis @bobwyman @online-news @jayrosen_nyu Well, they lie because it works. It’s a bit too late to find this out now. He’s going to be very successful in the GOP and even if he loses the next election he’ll become a lobbyist or Fox talking head or maybe CNN.

@bobwyman @jayrosen_nyu
@jeffjarvis @online-news

Politicians presumably tell little white lies, which is ho hum to the press; but apparently this guy has an imaginary life. One would have thought that the Republican Party would have checked him out.

@jayrosen_nyu @bobwyman @online-news @jeffjarvis

Exactly! Lazy reporting before the election
