New York Times criticized for “swastika” #Chanukah crossword puzzle. https://www.jpost.com/international/article-725239
@w7voa
Someone looked at that and didn't see it?
@ccradle @w7voa I could see an editor not noticing without an accompanying tweet to say “it looks like a swatstika”. But it feels intentional by whoever designed it.
@w7voa People need to get a life...

@w7voa I'm sure an accident but 88-across was "sith".

This timeline is a little on the nose...

@Josh @w7voa

We've always known what the NYT was, right?

@w7voa so I wasn't the only one who saw that in there in the grid. I thought I was losing it for a bit.
@w7voa Most professional crosswords are diagonally symmetrical, which inherently lends itself to swastika-like shapes. You can see swastikas in virtually any crossword, particularly the difficult Friday and Saturday dailies where words are longer. This is a very typical syndicated Friday puzzle, for instance.
@mypalmike @w7voa that looks just a bit different from this don't ya think
@bangatank @w7voa Do you routinely do crosswords? As someone who does (thousands over the years), I have seen many shaped similarly.
@mypalmike @w7voa that really is irrelevant. At most, it indicates that the designers of crosswords should simply pay more attention to these things, but particularly on a day like today and in the largest paper in the country
@bangatank @w7voa It's a swirl design. Outrage culture gonna get outraged.
@mypalmike @w7voa I find it sad that you're on here defending the honor of crossword puzzles while actual human beings are upset by something that could have easily been remedied by somebody paying the slightest attention. Not like we have a Nazi problem in this country or anything 🤷
@bangatank @w7voa There are ready white supremacists in this country. They want to exterminate Jews. That's a real fucking problem. A swirly design on a crossword puzzle is not a problem. This is pointless outrage by people who don't understand puzzle design.
@mypalmike @w7voa I think what's actually happening here is that you are freaking out because you think something you like is under attack. That's not the case. Maybe just let people criticize the fact that there's a goddamn swastika in the crossword today
@bangatank @w7voa It's simply not a swastika. Intent matters.
@bangatank @w7voa A couple people promoted the *idea* that it's there. Then we have the massive idea amplifier of Twitter, so other people who would not have seen it can get outraged too. It's the definition of rage bait.
@mypalmike @w7voa we're not on Twitter tho
@bangatank @w7voa Brilliant.
@mypalmike @w7voa the fact that you are more pressed to dismiss the Jewish people who are not happy about this as "outraged" shows where your priorities are. With your lil puzzles. I don't see anyone claiming it was intentionally done, just stupidly.

@bangatank @w7voa The Jewish people who I've seen who know crossword puzzles are more concerned about real problems.

Agree to disagree. Best to you.

@mypalmike @w7voa real Jews know crossword puzzles, as we all agree
@w7voa It is not a Swastika however.
@w7voa I'm sorry, but this is just a form of pareidolia, which humans are very prone to, like this: ;-) It's hardwired into our evolved neurology.
