i’ll stop being “a traitor” (??? seriously, infosec influencers??) when mastodon allows me to upload photos & videos properly & allows me to see the content i want rather than be forced to wade through unrelated garbage. why would i move over here just for a lackluster experience, holier-than-thou attitudes about other social media sites, & the inability to even promote my stuff anywhere near the level i’m able to on twitter??
@Tracketpacer best thing I’ve found about mastodon is the filtering actually works with greater consistency. But good lord the self importance, smugness, and drama is so much higher somehow.
@Tracketpacer oh damn a take i actually agree with
@Tracketpacer Yeah, early impressions of this place from me are mixed. It's all such a sad situation that The Old Website is becoming what it's becoming.
@Tracketpacer not sure about this traitor nonsense but I'm curious about how you're not able to "see the content I want"? Do you follow any hashtags (works on mobile apps)? You can follow as many as you want and they appear in your main feed. On the web app you can create "topics" by pinning multiple hashtags to one feed. Those two things alone have made Mastodon a great experience and I'm able to discover new people and ideas that way.
@Tracketpacer For example: I have several feeds of grouped hashtags for: space-related stuff, D&D, Urbanism/Transit, and NetEng. Each of those feeds groups up 5 hashtags into one feed - all separate from my main feed, where I also follow a few hashtags so I'll always see posts, even if I don't directly follow the people posting.
@Tracketpacer I don't use the Federated or Local feeds at all really. Occasionally I'll open them up if I just want to see the flood, but generally I'm sticking to my "hashtag feeds".
@tylerb i’ll work harder at all the stuff you mentioned simply because it looks like bird site is really stamping down on things now, but so far my experience with lists and hashtags here is extremely clunky & time-consuming. i prefer an algorithm that learns what i like, rather than having to curate & maintain lists, hashtags, & other items just so i don’t have to wade through topics i don’t care about.
@tylerb what bothers me the most is the fact i can’t post photos and videos here. it prevents me from actually developing as a content creator. many of the most vocal about moving to mastodon are influencers who already have massive followings & don’t have these kinds of issues when moving to new platforms. and then the comments about people staying on twitter being horrible people—it’s enough to make me actually hate it here before i even start.

@Tracketpacer Yeah the photos thing is weird - I've done that without issue. Video I'm less certain about - I suppose the work-around would be link to a proper video sharing site - especially ones that don't require accounts to view (YouTube/TikTok/etc).

As for those comments - those are bad takes and a lazy way of expressing their (very misdirected) frustration at what's happening over there. ☹️ I think there's real potential here - and I think the "warts" that exist here will only get better.

@Tracketpacer this platform is not geared towards popularity and self promotion. It's meant as a means for people with common interests to exchange and explore about shared knowledge on targeted topics. Somewhat of a haven for those that seek pertinent content.
@Cyclopath and yet we have influencers everywhere extolling its supposed superiority. i’m not looking for “popularity” so much as a way to reach people & share tech content that actually works.
@Cyclopath @Tracketpacer I’ve seen lots of testing done by various people that have found with only 5-10% of the followers here compared to elsewhere they are getting the same level of interaction. So you might find that your reach is actually a lot further than you expect. Just look at this thread for instance.
@Cyclopath @Tracketpacer Emotions are also high at the moment regarding the other site and that can cause people to react badly and take out their anger and frustration in the wrong way and towards the wrong people. Hopefully that calms down and you don’t suffer from these attacks, though they do seem to be worse at the other site. Give the hashtags time to replace the algorithm too. It’s different which can feel frustrating but for me it’s felt so much better with time.
