Sigh, well, looks like todays pain levels will be firmly and stubbornly around a 6. So no going out with the kids. 😞

But :D, i can dust off my system, update kali and look around. Maybe try a few other distros since ill mostly be in bed today.

What flavor of linux are you runnin'? Ive been thinking of going back to Mint but if there's. Anything new worth looking into? 🀩🀩🀩 lol

@Mari_Thomas Debian has been my primary OS for a good while. Stable and configurable, with a pretty good software repository.
@f00fc7c8 i have never run Debian but itll be nice to take a look :). Ty 😊 Its been a while since ive customized anything to my needs :). I wish more people would try linux and other opensource software its good to be able to adjust the tools you work with. Though im mostly playing around πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

@Mari_Thomas Playing around is valid, what I love about Linux is that it is genuinely fun.

Debian isn't horribly difficult to set up, but it's definitely more difficult than Mint or Kali to install - so if you need help you can message me, as I've gotten pretty good with it

@Mari_Thomas debian testing is pretty legit, I keep coming back to it
@Mari_Thomas Garuda, if you fancy something arch based.
@akashyap54 ooh archlinux has been on my list for a while. I cant remember why i didnt take the leap. πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€” . I guess I'd better take a look at a top 10 list or two. πŸ˜‚. Garunda is completely new ro me, ive never heard the name. Ty googling πŸ˜€.
@Mari_Thomas @akashyap54 Anything but Arch based distros if you value your time and want a working machine that you always expect to boot. If you like to do a lot of beta testing, then that would be the best direction.
@mo8it @Mari_Thomas well they are fun to fool around with, till you end up with a wrong setting somewhere and now have no internet.
@akashyap54 @Mari_Thomas It is not about changing a setting. It is about a grub bug that prevents booting for example...
@akashyap54 @mo8it ugh, windows vista did that to me once grrrr.
@Mari_Thomas Im using Fedora. Not new or exciting but stable and works great with my old PCs.

@Madbasketballer i ran Fedora for many years, it worked well with my older systems. I agree very smooth install and it ran well on archaic specs.

There was a distro i loved. It lasted about 5 minutes then they shut it down. Bah, i cant remember the name but people said it was a bit like the old mac's ui. Darn i wish i could remember what it was called. I wanna say it was around 2010 ish

@Mari_Thomas hmm back then there was this one named gOS that looked a bit like Mac I think.
@Mari_Thomas
I'm using plain old Debian. Went through a fair few Distros but liked Debian the most for daily use. Good package repository by default, and is common enough that Google/Forums easily gets you through most issues.
@Mari_Thomas i have Bodhi Linux on my laptop, it's a nice lightweight system :D
@Mari_Thomas
I am literally replacing fedora KDE spin with the KDE version of this nobaraproject.org right now.
Just because it's a PITA finding the right stuff for davinci resolve to work
@Mari_Thomas flavor of Linux ... um ... I've tried too many. Currently Pop!_OS on my desktop and Debian for my VMs. My servers themselves are now running Proxmox which is based on Debian.
@Mari_Thomas ... looks like I'm setting up dual booting with Ubuntu soon. I want to use DaVinci Resolve but with my AMD GPU it doesn't play nice on Pop!_OS.
@techaddressed @Mari_Thomas I'm trying nobaraproject.org/ for that reason AMD Voodoo
@techaddressed @Mari_Thomas while it was awesome having all the goodies ready to install sans fuss but everything kept hard locking and jellyfin / netflix had serious audio/video sync issues
@Mari_Thomas use Fedora on my gaming machine and and am starting to play with arch on my little machine
@Mari_Thomas For years I used Ubuntu but still needed to occasionally run Windows via a Virtual Box VM. Thanks to improvements in Windows Subsystem for Linux with GUI support I found that I can use Windows as the host OS and run all the Linux programs I need in WSL. And yes, I do realize I’m wadding into a Linux distro thread mentioning Windows. It’s a good example of the unwise decisions I make on Monday mornings.

@jmorris lol, thats totally ok πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚. Im not really all that brand or flavor loyal, even though i have my favorites, ive found thats not the best way to go. Using the best tool for the job is a sort of rule of thumb for me.

Windows has its uses but Linux has my heart ❀️. OSx meh. I could never justify the expenditure. Ive had an ipod touch when they came out and loved them for music and playlists and a few other things. Now theyre lightweight garbage, tiny, with a terrible battery life .

@Mari_Thomas Been enjoying Fedora Silverblue for a while now. The transactional base system makes updates seamless (dare I say, fun?)

If you’re going to give it a shot (and haven’t tried it before), I’d highly recommend going against the orthodoxy and using cargo, go, etc., to install command-line apps into your home folder (instead of doing everything in a container) and use containers for building stuff only and Flatpak for everything else :)

@aral @Mari_Thomas I like nixos.org I think #nixos has some advantages in comparison to Fedora Silverblue

But Mint is the best choice to get the normal things going without difficulties.
@paul @Mari_Thomas I would’ve gone with #nixos but I wanted to use an OS, not get a PhD in it ;)
@Mari_Thomas Shameless plug but we have a custom Linux distro called TROMjaro - www.tromjaro.com/. Not only that it is free for everyone, but we don't ship with any package that's freemium, collects data, and such. Based on Manjaro and XFCE, we have custom packages like a layout switcher to make it look like Gnome, Windows and so forth.

We implemented global menus, HUD, our themes are consistent across most apps (QT and GTK) something I did not see any distro able to do.

We have a free VPN, a customized Firefox and more. See the main page and give it a try if you so wish.
@tio oooh, ty, im off to get breakfast :D ill take a look as soon as im back thanks :D
@tio I love a good shameless plug!! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ Whenever i can can learn somethings from the original its just golden βœ¨οΈπŸ’–πŸ’–
