Any journalist who is happy *some* of you have had your #Twitter accounts restored, while others are STILL #suspended without a shred of justification, simply do not understand where #elonmusk is going with this.

He plans on monetizing the mob to humiliate you and keep you compliant. Your intentional targeting and discomfort will be a financially valuable form of entertainment.

@KraftTea My stance is that deleting your Twitter account isn’t helpful, just using it less, stop using it altogether or repeatedly recommending to use the Fediverse there are the better options.

If you want to really make a difference, reactivate your Twitter account and start trying to convince as many people as possible to move over to other platforms. Post articles about which other platforms are better, let everyone know your reasons for leaving, DM your friends and convince them to join in, spam your followers with links to your other social media profiles. Make Twitter as unusable as possible for anything other than migrating to other platforms. If you already deleted your account, you have 30 days (1 year if you're verified) to log back in and your account will be reactivated with all your followers intact. The only way to save Twitter is by destroying it.

Infosec Exchange
@frumble I think an orchestrated, assisted transition of people to migrate would be very useful. It would also give people more choices and more leverage, which is helpful. I am still on Twitter too, but I hope to help people get out, as well as to educate people in my circle about the issues involved.
@frumble @KraftTea Someone pointed out that anyone with name recognition and "brand" really needs to not delete or shutter their accounts since Musk is intent on releasing abandoned account names. If you've got name recognition or a brand, do an occasional shitpost to prevent being marked as inactive.
@KraftTea I think it a bad idea to do it because I often block heavy users so they don't appear in my timeline so I can save time and focus on the accounts I care about. I don't want them to be demoted because I block them. Only very rarely do I have to block someone because they were mean because most people on Twitter are polite.
@Paperlate The problem is, so many of these blue checks are kind of hivemind ideologue trolls, they WILL work in a more-or-less organized way to target journalists and those they oppose, to deny them an audience. This is likely to lead to a "winners and losers" situation that is *especially* hard on small, independent investigative journalists, while encouraging cults of personality. It shouldn't be what anyone wants, but if you give trolls a way of targeting people, they will use it.
@KraftTea but the adjudication will be by the "AI" so will be shurely honest
@KraftTea I’m wondering where Musk goes with this. The $8 subscribers will inevitably be right wingers hardliners that are bad for business. Is he naive enough to think he can push them to alter their views? Does he think tweets are how journalists are paid? It’s just another “what kind of moron is he?” decision.
@pierogipowered @KraftTea This is exactly what Elon wants. Reduces visibility of left of center accounts, mob rule for the Q/MAGA crowd that will pay the 8$. Instant right wing forward Twitter.
@SnowIntheAir Does he think shadowbanned users will continue using the platform? Can subscribers fund the platform in place of advertisers? Or is the goal to overtake Gab/Truth/Rumble as the MAGA platform with him as chief grifter?
@pierogipowered I'm not sure we can say what his goal is. None of the moves he's made point to any positive business motive rather than ego-stroke & punitive actions.
@KraftTea he’s not really thinking things through, he is simply on a power trip. He’s a very wealthy guy but quite socially inept, he hungers for the adoration of fans and gets deeply upset when people mock him or boo him in public. This emotional rollercoaster is making him unpredictable and highly emotional.
@KraftTea this is a really really terrible idea. Or I guess a brilliant one, depending on your perspective.
@KraftTea @tchambers people need to stop reading/using any news agency that still resides in the bird site and start boycotting companies that still advertise there until it’s nothing but a digital wasteland that only the far right and places like mypillow advertise on
@robert_said_what @KraftTea @tchambers I see this Musk thing going the same way Trump went. White folks refuse to acknowledge what's right before their eyes until it's too late. We black folks don't own any of these media companies, so we don't have a say.
Musk is bad news. We need to all do something about this now! These people always escalate.

@Agora
All I can suggest is, don't underestimate your power and ability to create change.

There are a lot of PoC who use Twitter, and are unaware of the choices available to them, or who haven't really dealt with the full force of what is going down there yet.

I don't expect it to get better. But they don't need to hear it from me. They need to hear it from people within their own community and within their own circles.

@KraftTea True!! Although, I really wish Trevor Noah would take Musk. People who grew up in South Africa have a pretty good idea of where this is all going. People like Musk always escalate. Noah had a huge platform. Many AA listen to him.
@Agora @KraftTea I’m hoping they ask #AmberRuffin to take over the #DailyShow I think her reach could be amazing.
@Agora @KraftTea @tchambers all we can do is refuse to use companies that advertise there, refused to watch news agencies that are still there and when enough people have stopped watching and buying they will move off. The important thing is to make sure they know. I cancelled my NY Times subscription and when it asked why I said “stop being elons sock puppet and supporting a fascist”
@robert_said_what @KraftTea @tchambers the problem lies with people refusing to act. They are still making excuses.
@Agora @KraftTea @tchambers all we do is stop accepting them. Oh I’m sorry, I don’t use Twitter, I do use mastodon though. The fact that the Washington post just had a big article on what mastodon is and how to use it means there’s a shift coming. When corporate news agencies are making sure you know how to use something that’s not an accident
@KraftTea this will end up as just another clown car show. The folks who pay are PAYING to rant and troll the people they hate. Block & mute will just mean that their objects of reactionary hate will just disappear and leave them asking for their $8 back

@KraftTea Thanks for sharing this perspective and a screenshot of this tweet.

However I don't know who you are; you've almost nothing in a 24-48 hour old profile. You've also not provided either a link to the original tweet or an archived copy of the tweet though at least one fake tweet attributed to Musk has made the rounds on Mastodon today.

Please don't make readers need to validate this by going to Twitter; archive a copy and share the archive link.

@femme_mal
I should post an introduction here soon. Lots of my initial readers were friends from zee bird s(h)ite, so it's no surprise you don't know me.
Here's a bio that was written about me from the fmr. director of BBC World Service, for a British journalism textbook he contributed to.

Elon Musk on Twitter

“Twitter will start incorporating mute & block signals from Blue Verified (not Legacy Blue) as downvotes”

Twitter

@femme_mal So yeah... I am still really new here, and its a bit of a culture shock. I didn't expect my post to get so many boosts, but I try to be very transparent.

I've overseen a large online community before -- 2nd in charge of LiveJournal.com in its early, open source, community run days.

Elon doesn't care about / apply value to / hasn't learned the lessons that those who have grown communities would know.

He's a deeply flawed personality, coming in with ulterior motives & goals.

@KraftTea I rely on Marcus Aurelius' first principles from Meditations X when it comes to the opaque and frustrating acts of Elon Musk. What is it on the face of it, what is its essential nature, what has it been since its origin?

Musk has been excessively catered to, encouraged to believe himself above his peers; he's fabricated credentials and avoided accountability for them. This is not the nature of an advocate for free speech or democratized media.

@KraftTea Musk can't be trusted. When sharing material from Twitter, always archive it first in Internet Archive's Wayback Machine because the long-term viability of Twitter is questionable and Musk has a habit of deleting tweets.

@KraftTea With regard to the fabricated credentials, see the archived thread below. It's all public record but it's not the kind of material readily available to folks who don't know where to look. This is why Musk couldn't simply cough up $1B poison pill fee and back away from Twitter — this would have been produced in court by Twitter when he was sued to close the deal. https://web.archive.org/web/20221118001824/https://twitter.com/capitolhunters/status/1593307541932474368

“Someone has to say it: Elon Musk has lied for 27 years about his credentials. He does not have a BS in Physics, or any technical field. Did not get into a PhD program. Dropped out in 1995 & was illegal. Later, investors quietly arranged a diploma - but not in science. 🧵1/â€?

Twitter

@femme_mal
I'm quite familiar with his fabricated credentials, but wasn't aware of how it might influence his decision re: the poison pill.

I naturally assumed it was a combination of his ego and a tendency to gamble in a rash manner, using hucksterism to bail him out, when needed,that was the reason for him not paying.

Elon has taken big gambles, but has backed them up with lies, privilege, and puffery that most decent people would simply never dream of relying on.

@KraftTea IIRC there were two different points during the acquisition process when his credentials might have been called into question, the second of which was the case in Delaware's Chancery Court to force completion of the deal.

SEC might have an issue with Musk's misrepresentation of himself repeatedly to shareholders; the board of directors is already peeved with him, w one of largest shareholders calling an absentee CEO. If he was booted, what happens to his power and capital?

@femme_mal
Lots of people weren't paying attention to the whole Delaware court case, but it had some very interesting revelations as to his personal character... or lack thereof.

@femme_mal
He fabricates and spins A LOT.
I am almost certain that key aspects of his claims re: the recent "stalking" were made up, as a way of justifying his targeting of ElonJet.

He was in a very video monitored part of a very video monitored city, and never filed a police report, presumably because he didn't want the LAPD to pull video from all the nearby cameras.

@KraftTea Yup. And if Bellingcat can get more OSINT on him, they will share it. They've already pinpointed where it happened, may be just a matter of time before the rest of the true story emerges.

@KraftTea how about just leave?

@macf00bar
I noticed that is exactly what the govt. of Germany seems intent upon doing.

I think it's essential for people to AT LEAST start having dual presences, while there is still time and using them strategically.

It troubles me that I added a link to my Twitter link bio just an hour or so before the ability to do so was cut off. I know others will follow, but it feels like getting the last boat out of a totalitarian society.

It will only become a harder choice for others to leave.

@KraftTea I’d block everyone with a blue check.
@prrosado I already block them liberally. But the problem being... their blocks and muting will likely become a tool that can be weaponized against those whose facts they dislike.
@KraftTea Oh, I don’t disagree at all. I’m finding it harder to justify staying on the platform with all the extra work involved in just trying to ensure I have a reasonably pleasant experience.

@prrosado One thing that has helped me is that if I see a sponsored post, I automatically block it. Doesn't matter if its Apple or Sony. If they're going to spam me, they lose the right to discuss things with me in a more sharing, civilized manner.

After a few months of this, it's greatly cut down on the # of sponsored posts I get.

@KraftTea Not quite sure if I should mention this or not, but it is absolutely possible to be “Twitter Blue” verified and not pay a cent.
And the loophole really isn’t even that complex or hard to do

@rayredacted
Please... do share!

I can see a mass effort to do something like this forcing him to take it offline... again.

@KraftTea This is the type of person you run from if they believe you have harmed them and are wrong for the very fact of doing so.

@KraftTea Wow, that's horrible - and actually kind of brilliant as a piece of populist right-wing memetic warfare.

Basically, Musk is designing this so that he won't *have* to ban journalists any more: he is just empowering the neo-Nazi mob to render anyone non-compliant as invisible and irrelevant.

It's "free speech" as majoritarian ostracism. George Orwell would -- well, not be proud, but more likely say, "That, there? That's what I was talking about."

@jducoeur Except, of course, it isn't majoritarian or democratic in any way.

It's the end of Animal Farm, with pigs walking upright, wearing suits.

All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.

@KraftTea if a journalist is qualified to be trusted they are no longer on twitter, if they are still there, we’ll ignore them.

@dadisholdish I don't think that's entirely fair. There are lots of journalists that are regional, or significantly disconnected from these kind of issues, until it starts to impact those they know.

This is only just beginning, but the totalitarianism has hit hard and fast already. Twitter is not just a gated community. It's now one with barbed wire, intended to keep people in.

There are a fair amount of media owners who'll insist on having a Twitter presence; they can be authoritarians too.

@KraftTea institutional ‘own the libs’ equals ‘own the press’. History says what?
@KraftTea or they understand & don’t give a damn
@KraftTea I cannot believe they don't grasp this. Luckily, I am a black woman who grew up in Apartheid, South Africa. I have NEVER given Musk the benefit of the doubt. I have always known exactly who he is.
@KraftTea the $8chan people are gonna be launching lists and extensions to mass block people
@adityasher
They are in such ideological lockstep - goosestep?! - they might not even need to do that.
