This is something I'm really worried about. We need a response to AI generated art that doesn't depend on expanding surveillance or censorship (through stricter IP enforcement) or criminalize research etc (by expanding CFAA to include image scraping for example)

We've been down this exact road before, from the creation of the VCR to the explosion of the Internet. #CopyrightMaximalism does not help artists. Period. We need a better way. #copyright #AI #AIart #NoAIart #artificialintelligence

@evangreer: Thank you! This is an important point. The AI is not the enemy.
@evangreer Thank you for this. This is why I'm wary of those who are worried about AI "art" "stealing" from Artists. Because the answer to that is expanded copyright law, and we've been through that road so many times before that it's as if people seem willfully oblivious.

Image description (for anyone who needs it)...

Screenshot of a Twitter post by chip ( @frectalcounty ) that reads the following:

Yesterday, a GoFundMe claiming to "protect artists from Al technologies" launched with a $200k goal.

Tums out, it's actually a scheme to expand corporate IP law on behalf of some of the biggest enemies in the fight for artistic freedom (i.e, Disney)

It's already raised $70k.

@evangreer I can't remember how many times musicians have tried to die on the hill of more copyright and actually used the pittance paid per stream as justification for their argument.

The cognitive dissonance is real and astounding. Like, who do you think made those pymts so low?

@evangreer did you see the artists specifically generating images that violate the copyright of major studios to intentionally trigger this type of response https://www.dailydot.com/debug/ai-art-protest-disney-characters-mickey-mouse/
Artists fed up with AI-image generators use Mickey Mouse to goad copyright lawsuits

Artists are pushing back on imagery generated by AI by using the technology to create content containing copyrighted Disney characters.

@evangreer How about making scraping copyrighted works strictly opt-in instead of, well scraping? Ask the artists, if they say yes, include them in the training set. Crazy notion, i know.
