Johannes Vermeer died #OnThisDay in 1675. His most famous painting is likely Girl with a Pearl Earring, also known as the “Mona Lisa of the North” Vermeer’s mastery over light is evident in the softness of the girl’s gaze and the shine of the pearl earring.

@Alex_Verbeek I'd say The Geographer. I must admit that I have used several of his paintings, including the pearl, in teaching to tell a story about power and representation.
