People coming from the dumpster fire pay attention!!!!

Mastodon is NOT a clone of where you just came from.

Put that out of your head.

Any criticism that starts with that comparison is simply WRONG.

The culture is different.
The attitude is different.
HOW IT WORKS IS DIFFERENT.

So slow down. Take your time. Ask questions if you don't understand how something works.

Be patient and LEARN how Mastodon works and you may come to love this place as much as we do.

And WELCOME. πŸ˜ƒ

@Mrfunkedude

How it works is different. But culture and attitude are not part of the software, they grow from the people involved. So as that changes, so can they. So we all need to be open to change.

@Mrfunkedude that approach was so hot/cold I don't know what to think. 😬 Hope all does feel welcome.
@Mrfunkedude people are actually so nice and welcoming here!!!
@pitrouillesque Agreed! Let's all help to keep it that way!
@Mrfunkedude yes! I've joined a month ago and even though I still feel awkward I love the spirit. I don't want it to change, I would fight for mastodon to remain nice and welcoming even if I'm new
@Mrfunkedude And I have many questions.
@georgestpaul ask away.
@Mrfunkedude I totally get the separate server architecture. When I came over I knew not which was best for me, so I chose .world. I know this limits me as to who I might see and form/reform connections with here. I now see a large number of mutuals from Twitter are on .social or others. How do I switch, assuming you cannot connect two servers into one stream?

@georgestpaul You don't need to switch. You can follow anyone on any instance as long as you have their full address. For example mine is (had to switch @ with $ so it shows up) $mrfunkedude$mastodon.social

Your Local timeline just shows you toots from your instance. The Federated timeline shows you EVERYONES toots from all of the instances your instance is federated with.

So you're not really missing anything.

@Mrfunkedude Yet I am interested in finding people that I’ve formed bonds with that our only connection was Twitter, and we have unfortunately lost contact. I know this forum is different, and it’s refreshing not having many of the same things I didn’t care for over there, but it’s a case of rebuilding a loose network of friends to sure thoughts and enjoyable experiences (hopefully without the rampant negativity that Twitter grow into over the years).

@georgestpaul If your community has come over here, then it seems the best way to find them is to search relevant hashtags.

Also, engage with the local/federated timelines. You might find people there who fit your interests as well.

I'm sorry that you're missing your community. That sucks that it fell apart the way that it did. There are lots of people coming from the dumpster fire with the same problems.

You'll find your people in time. Everyone always does. Hang in there.

@Mrfunkedude Thank you. May I reserve the option of asking further dumb questions?
@Mrfunkedude My strategy is completely the opposite of the place I came from, as I did very little following to encourage followers there. Here, I'm following lots of people (just because their opinions are valuable and useful). If I get followers here, it's a bonus...
@Mrfunkedude Mastodon is very cool. The vibe is completely different and I like that.

@Mrfunkedude you'll have to excuse them - some are still on fire from that dumpster fire.

TBH I've no idea if the different attitude will endure here. I guess we'll have to see how the instance vs federated community thing scales, and if de-federation will help to keep unwelcome attitudes at bay. It might by essentially creating two honey pots in the fediverse, one for the social with empathy and one for the rest.

@Mrfunkedude we are here after migrating from there.
It’s different and still not sure about sone stuff but finding our way.
It feels good.
Hi everyone !
