Musk suspends journalists from Twitter, claims ‘assassination’ danger

Many of the journalists, including from The Washington Post and New York Times, had written about dramas surrounding billionaire Elon Musk's takeover of Twitter.

The Washington Post

No warning. I report on Elon Musk and other topics for The Washington Post and will keep doing so because free speech and transparency are important for the world.

In the last few days I ... wrote about Elon Musk. I posted links to publicly available, legally acquired data as well as links to Mastodon, which also now is banned on Twitter.

Elon Musk is free to ban whoever he wants from Twitter, just like people are free to take their speech somewhere else.

@drewharwell I'll follow you here
@DemFromCT @drewharwell same! I’m following @oneunderscore__ , @micahflee , @donieosullivan & all *actual journalists* that got banned fr the failing twitter that is twitter

@drewharwell @DemFromCT @micahflee @donieosullivan @oneunderscore__

totally normal stuff. Excellent attorney, @marcelias can’t share his #mastodon account link on #twitter bc #musk is a freakin child

@drewharwell Aren't you concerned that the person who owns Washington Post is on the same side as Elon (because billionaire)?
@MaxPow3r11 @drewharwell at least he's not firing journos that report on his megayacht

@MaxPow3r11 @drewharwell

That is not the same thing at all. If Bezos began personally editing and overseeing what can be published, such an argument could be made. Ideally WaPo would not be owned in this way, but there is no comparison to the dumpster fire that is now Twitter.

@Probs @drewharwell I'm saying billionaires are not your friend. They are going to defend each other before defending any of us.

(see: all their past actions. current actions. future actions).

@MaxPow3r11 @drewharwell Do you really think that two of the richest people in the world can be on the same side? I think they love seeing each other losing money and power.
@reptiloidfried @drewharwell yes. Do you really think they can't?
@MaxPow3r11 @drewharwell I think GAFAM all want to build the Wechat-like super app and love when their competitors fail.
@drewharwell he has such a thin skin.

@rizzo @drewharwell crazy to watch someone set $44B and years of human labor on fire

@joshuakfarrar @rizzo @drewharwell

Or hilarious.

@drewharwell You're doing an awesome job Drew!
@drewharwell WaPo can easily verify you on here with a bit of code on the website. They should think about doing it for all of the reporters on Mastodon. You do good work. Thank you for what you do.
@drewharwell Welcome to Mastodon. Hope you speak loudly here.

@drewharwell
Boxing himself in. Every day that box gets smaller and smaller.

#elonmusk #birdsite #twittersuspensions

@drewharwell Followed you here to follow you here. :)
@drewharwell Following your reporting.
@drewharwell It's better not being a content creator for the Musk machine anyway.
@drewharwell
You’re stuck with us now, Harwell 😈
@drewharwell Glad to see you on here, Drew!

@drewharwell

but we also need to move the audience here.

@drewharwell following here now. The reporter bans were the last straw for me. Keep doing your thing!
@drewharwell Musk is sort of free, as long as there are no shareholders' meetings at Tesla coming up. We could all buy shares just to harass him, but he'd probably sue...

@drewharwell Your news organization should start its own mastodon instance.

You could be @[email protected]

Talk to your editors.

@drell @drewharwell Yes, please. Wapo needs an official presence here.
@drell @drewharwell or talk to your IT guys and just have them set it up for you.
@drell
@drewharwell @chargrille
Get quote-boosts. Get them to start a #Calckey instance!
@drewharwell @AnneLandgraf I mean… you didn’t start an insurrection so you’re not wanted 🤷‍♂️😂
@drewharwell this is certainly going to be quite the advertisement for Mastodon
@drewharwell Good evening! And welcome! Great to have you here. There will be a big influx of new users here in the next few hours and days, linked to your ban. mastodon.social already shows signs of stress. It would be great if you could convince The Washingont Post to setup a Mastodon server for its journalists and readers! Being on the WaPo Mastodon would be like a verification (in addition to posting a link to your Mastodon page on your websites). :) Thanks.
@drewharwell The upside to Musk's tantrum today is that I'm finally finding a lot of accounts that I follow on Twitter here on Mastadon.
@drewharwell I wrote something mean about Trump. I was first in Twitter jail for the next 7 days, then all of a sudden I got the lock message you show.
So I took the cue to deactivate, because I'd been considering it ever since he bought Twitter, and frankly almost am glad of him pissing me off enough to deactivate.
@drewharwell welcome to the platform. Seems like we are on the cusp of something momentous. I’d argue this is true Internet technology: open, decentralised. A new backbone of communication.
@drewharwell also Twitter just blacklisted all the fediverse instances. Including all servers running Mastodon, Pleroma and Pixelfed. You can post or send urls to those servers on Twitter.
@drewharwell here's a tip, anyone left on that foul bird's nest can test Musk's position quite simply. Watch what happens when you post the same sentiment towards dictators and authoritarians that Iranian protestors expressed.

@drewharwell FWIW Drew, I'd recommend approaching Washington Post execs immediately, and not only making sure the Washington Post is legitimately set up on Mastodon or elsewhere like Post.

I'd also recommend the Post execs immediately pull Twitter from the sharing tool on all WaPo articles.

People can still share manually to Twitter or anywhere - but the Post should not assist them to do so on Twitter any longer.

@drewharwell My hope is that this is what will cause the Post, the Times, et al to set up their own Mastodon servers that federate with the rest of the world and act as “inherent verification” for their reporters and columnists.
@drewharwell said from jump street @elonmusk DID NOT care about free speech. Constantly asked if employees at his companies were free to voice thier opinions? @twitter_very_official should die now.. should be nothing more than truth social 2.0

@drewharwell @drewharwell He’s a little tin-pot hat dictator playing Putin by eliminating all dissenting voices. And, in true vatnik fashion, calls censorship free speech.

Love is Hate. War is Peace. Elon Musk is the new Big Brother. However, by silencing centrist and left voices, he has only succeeded in moving Parler to a different platform.

Same voices talking to each other. Same people and bots in the same old circle jerk.

@drewharwell Little Lord Faunterloy (LLF) is welcome to enjoy his acquisition without great journalists. The Mastodon Federation is a brighter place with you here.

@drewharwell

Well said Drew Harwell. Here are a series of arguments outlining why it is now obligatory to leave Twitter, which is not a public square but a private company stood up by the strength of ITS USERS.

@drewharwell By the way… Welcome to Mastodon. New home of the pre-musk Twitter culture. He thinks he silenced us…
I was talking to people around the world with similar interests before twitter was well known, before Tom started looking for friends on MySpace.
Back in the day, we’d get a domain and create our own chat room/msg boards.
