Now that I’ve been here for several weeks, my initial thoughts about Mastodon are pretty much the same:
Love that there is no algorithm serving me posts;
Love that there is no QT - that function is more for your audience than actual communication. I like actual conversations;
Love how the need for followers is diminished. I am perfectly happy posting toots in the wind.
Love the thoughtfulness. CW + sensitive images + photo descriptions are all good.
Love not drinking from the fire hose.
I also really enjoy:
Discovery via explore/local/federated tabs on the right rail. Getting a peek into folks' lives is my fav part of networks (minus the -isms, of course).
There are no ads. Look, I love ads (and advertiser money to support journalism). I've been in media for 20+ years, creating ads + covering the ad industry. But brands on social are rarely good. (Except for customer service; that's a great use-case.) No corporate messaging here = a good choice, imo.
@joshsternberg What don't you like?
@yancy search could be better. would also be cool to scroll through other instances. and the apps could be a bit more fluid. but these are all workable.
@joshsternberg have spent less time but so far agree with a lot of what you’re saying. So grateful to have less “this is what time I know…time for a 🧵” - that was starting to drive me insane.
@joshsternberg Was waiting for what you don't like.
@keaton search could be better. would also be cool to scroll through other instances. and the apps could be a bit more fluid. but these are all workable.
@joshsternberg engagement is surprisingly high no matter how many people follow you, the ratio of engagement to followers is off the charts compared to twitter
@anthony i have yet to even look at engagement metrics here. it's nice being oblivious.
