I've been following the build up and war daily for well over a year and I will never get used to the fact that a major European country and its capital is under weekly massive assault with cruise missiles and strategic bombers to disable its basic infrastructure like heat and power in a war overtly attempting colonialist conquest.
@Pwnallthethings Putin brought war to Europe. History will remember him for that
@silhouette @Pwnallthethings He did. And yet still many Americans ignorantly don’t think of Ukraine as part Europe in the same way that they don’t think of Puerto Rico as part of the US. The right wing is counting on that ignorance to push against financially supporting Ukraine (or PR for that matter). Appreciate your toot for reinforcing that Putin is waging war on Europe.

@Pwnallthethings Would have it been OK if this was happening in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East or Asia?

Atrocities are atrocities in whatever context.

I hope you didn't mean it in the way it came out.

You are still on time to amend your comments.

@kikobar @Pwnallthethings idk when it became acceptable to demand people conform their opinions to yours but I hope it wasn't today

@ssfckdt @Pwnallthethings
I am not demanding to conform with my opinion.

I just genuinely thought they didn't mean it.

If that was what they meant... it is just sad.

@kikobar @Pwnallthethings Following your logic it would be okay for you if it would have happened in North America. But "you are still on time to amend your comments".
@Karv @Pwnallthethings
Of course not either. It would be unacceptable in whatever context.
@kikobar @Pwnallthethings Okay, context: After 2 world wars started in Europe no one expected another major war to come. They wrote about what's currently happening in Europe - you felt it would be okay for them if there'd be a war somewhere else as mentioning a specific continent in your opinion leaves out others. Yet you yourself didn't mention North America or Oceania. Their context is Europe's history. You created a wholly different context and did what you blame others for.

@Karv @Pwnallthethings
Fair enough.

I believe it was me who took it the wrong way, and I apologize.

Bottom line, I think neither of us can believe we can do this again to anyone anywhere in the world after all our combined history, and that is why it is so disturbing.

@kikobar @Pwnallthethings We all make mistakes sometimes, don't worry too much.

Most of the world is stable. In Asia there is a small chance of a conflict that could grow. The middle east sadly is a powder keg with possible civil wars or minor conflicts - but I doubt a major one would start.

No one expected the invasion and atrocities carried out by the russists either... it was "just sabre-rattling". Stable democracies probably won't start wars. Not sure about autocracies etc. though.

@kikobar it's very possible the thing that makes this war more disturbing, and thus "unthinkable," than some other possibilities is that it's a nuclear-armed power seeking to absorb a neighbor, with all of the geopolitical risks that entails.

You're of course right that wars of conquest ought to be unacceptable anywhere, but the capacity of both the target and the rest of the world to respond is more limited in this instance, and that means we're all a bit on edge.

@kikobar @Pwnallthethings I didn't read his post that way. You can be shocked it's happening in one place and still oppose it happening somewhere else. War is an atrocity, always, wherever it happens.
@Pwnallthethings @allsumnull Perun covers this... If Russia thinks strategic bombing will work, history typically indicates that it doesn't https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CE6RINU8JLg
@Pwnallthethings how is the missile stock of Russia? How close are they to depletion?
@Pwnallthethings Why are people surprised when Ukraine attacks locations inside Russia? If you are being attacked, of course you would attack your enemy where they live!!!
@Pwnallthethings What Russia is doing in Ukraine, truly is colonial conquest. And those of us from colonising countries, just sit back and hand Ukraine our weapons for war.
@Pwnallthethings pretty crazy times the past few years
@Pwnallthethings and meanwhile on local and national news today let’s talk about a clown in a Superman suit, a weird guy who got high and bought a bird app, now over to you Arron for weather & traffic 🤷‍♂️
Our media is pathetic
@Pwnallthethings And yet Bulgaria and Slovakia are still pro Russia. Which is truly some suicidal behavior. If Ukraine does become Russian (as unlikely as that is) how long does either nation think it'll be before Russia tries to push its sphere even further?
@Pwnallthethings It's the overt war of colonial conquest that gets me. That's absolutely precisely the thing the UN was formed to prevent. Even the US doesn't go around saying "Iraq/Grenada/Panama/Kuwait/WestGermany/Haiti is now part of the United States"
@Pwnallthethings A lot like the non-military version happening in the US. A major political party has been allowed to arm itself and continually attack our people and government, without hindrance,
@Pwnallthethings NYT says Putin will accept up to 300,000 dead soldiers.
@Pwnallthethings ...and we started believing anything Putin says as of when, exactly?
@Pwnallthethings it definitely breaks down some of the “all the bad stuff happens Over There” mentality that it’s easy to settle into as a comfortable westerner. Hopefully the feeling will engender some popular solidarity in less “relatable” conflicts and causes.
