It was clear from the jump Musk didn’t understand the site he’d bought, but I’m still a bit surprised he doesn’t grasp that journalists are the main reason Twitter was more relevant than any number of other similar platforms. Can easily imagine looking back on this as a tipping point.
@normative it will be
@damemagazine @normative for you journalists who want a Twitter-like app without the trolls or tyrannical owner, go to Spoutible.com and register for the pre-beta rollout. It was originally scheduled for January 31st, but the events of the last 24 hours have caused Christopher Bouzy to speed up the time frame.
@normative I hope many shift to Mastodon. It’s not perfect but I really like it in general.
@paulwilson @normative I’ve tried Tribel, Mastodon, and Post. I feel like Mastodon is where it’s at and I hope most of the journalists move here. I’d hate to see it splinter between this and Post
@jasonm080 @paulwilson @normative Post should make their posts available via ActivityPub like Mastodon servers do, right?
@paulwilson @normative I had never even heard of mastodon until musk gave them a better advertisement than they could ever buy. What an idiot

@paulwilson @normative Mastodon is good for longer-form stuff, but I worry about imposing on the server owners.

Once Spoutible.com is ready I'll be spending most of my time there.

@paulwilson @normative it's gonna be really hard, if not impossible, to get people on Mastodon. You don't just "make an account". The whole federated thing makes it really confusing to sign up for.
@normative He'll always have Mike Lindell and Lindell TV.
@normative yeah journalists analysis is basically why I was there.
@normative correct. Before this it was “nuts I guess I’ll miss @Popehat on Twitter but at least there’s still [list],” now I have a reason to re-find everyone.
@rjgnyc @normative @Popehat Was about to tag Popehat in for you before I noticed you'd already found the @. I need to go to bed lol.
@normative I thought anyone could be a journalist though? 🙄
@normative the value of twitter was always who was on it, the politicos, the journalists, the activists, etc. That and the real time nature of it. The tech is nothing special, nor is the # of users that great. But if you were into current events or politics you had to be there.
@normative yep! Twitter was the best way to get an aggregated set of news across multiple sectors (business, politics, entertainment, tech) directly from the people writing it. If I just want to argue with someone, I can go to Reddit (or Tumblr…. Or…insert other social media here)
@Downfroggy @normative I thought that's why we got married.
@Downfroggy @normative Exactly. Which is why I'm counting the days until Christopher Bouzy's Spoutible.com pre-beta is rolled out.
@normative There's a saying with people who play MMORPGs - if you aggro (anger) one bear, you aggro all bears. Journalists tend to stick together, even if they disagree on some things. This will not end well for Musk - and this is likely to be remembered as something like a Thursday Night Massacre. And will probably go about as well as that Nixon's Friday version did...
@[email protected] Slightly worried that even with a decade-old profile pic I look so elderly I need “aggro” explained. ;)
@normative Touche! I do tend to err on the side of clarity, though. :)

@PahandaBear @normative the current NY Post site home page is a subtle example of this.

“Angry Bird” with a huge pic of Musk

@normative precisely this. I first joined in the lead up to the 08 election. My daily habit for the last couple years has been checking news (via carefully curated lists). For a lot of folks, the site doesn’t offer much other than that. Lulz only go so far.
@normative at least it’ll cost him billions and require some very uncomfortable conversations with some Russians and Saudis
@normative I definitely followed numerous journalists for the new links.
@normative he doesn't care. He's 100% all in on making the fox news of social media
@normative the primary reason I, just a common middle class uninvolved democrat, joined Twitter was to read Sopan Deb’s reporting from Trump’s 2016 campaign trail.
@normative I honestly thought he had an angle to take on google news and completely overhaul the news industry. Well, before he started hemming and hawing to try to back out at least.
@normative he does, and he hates it. he thinks he can maintain the site's stature and reach while chasing away all the media class elites and their admirers and replacing them with his people, largely discredited contrarians and reactionaries who feel similarly aggrieved. that's my take anyway.
@normative News sources are about the only thing keeping me there. It's like Leon is going through my follow list and knocking them off one at a time.
@normative I'm surprised too, that a seemingly intelligent man such as yourself can't see what Musk's agenda is? Actually, he has many.
@normative Only if it is for the advertisers -- or, more precisely, if it keeps them from quietly returning after the heat dies down a little.
@normative if I can't keep reading posts by the journalists I like, I have no need for twitter. I suspect I'm not the only one.
@normative or maybe destroying Twitter was the point. Maybe that is why banks are not greatly concerned that those loans will not be repaid.
@normative MuskmElon has always been anti-press unless it's the fawning tech press telling all his Muskrats that he's the greatest. Intentional anti-press tactics at Tesla because he only wants the Muskmythical version told, etc.
@normative I think he's bit off more than he bargained for. He's single- Handley destroying Twitter!!!

@normative very. Hell newsrooms could spin up their own instance. Validate each other. Etc.

He opened the floodgates with this.

@normative It will become like Truth Social, just a guess. Never been on it.

@normative

And $TSLA in freefall. It might get very real for Elon, very fast.

@normative I think we have definitely crossed the Rubicon tonight. I'm not sure there's going back. I imagine many of their colleagues will depart voluntarily as Twitter becomes (more) hostile to anyone who isn't a Musk sycophant. There is also a cascading effect on Tesla.
@normative Reading and influencing journalists is the main reason I used twitter. Without journalists, it's the new MySpace.
@normative It was the tipping point for me.
@normative Journalists being there was my main reason for being there. That, and a handful of fun local friends.
@normative why do you think he was working in normal “good faith”?
@normative Seriously, I joined the birdsite solely to learn from journalists, lawyers, the politically savvy, and othe subject matter experts. Love that we’re finding each other in a more intentional way here. #NoMuskRatLove
@normative I hope all the banned journalists create accounts here. #TwitExit
@normative nah man, everyone goes to Twitter to listen to VC podcast hosts.
@normative he’s not nearly as smart as he thinks he is…in fact, in many ways he’s ridiculously stupid.
@normative the journalist's with breaking scoops is what made twitter interesting...it's turning into a rightwing rag site...not very engaging
