I think I want to run multiple instances due to instance blocking so I can see all my friends and news accounts I want to see.

Is there an app that consolidates feeds from multiple instances for you? Or one that lets you cross post to multiple instances easily?

@425suzanne I don’t think there is an app that does that that does not involve account switching.
@425suzanne I haven’t found one yet. Related question: can you still see toots from @BGStatsApp from your instance?

@eerko @425suzanne @[email protected]

Butting in here (hope that's OK)... mastodon.online is suspended on tabletop.social, so we can't see @BGStatsApp here, I'm afraid

@harperrob @425suzanne Thanks, we’ll start moving then!
@eerko @425suzanne @[email protected] Nope, mastodon.online does not appear to be viewable form tabletop.social...

@eerko @[email protected]

Nope. And that's a good example of why I'm seeking a solution. I completely respect my instances blocking strategy - they're trying to keep their marginalized community safe. But I need to find a way to keep connected among all the instances.

@425suzanne I jumped to mastodon.world because I saw Gil was there so it wasn't blocked by tabletop. They also didn't block the servers I wanted to see, so I felt it was a middle ground. Don't care for the local, but I just check the tabletop.social local feed to find people I want to follow to populate my home with relevant interests.
@eerko @425suzanne We just moved the @BGStatsApp account, so I think you’ll be able to see it now!
@425suzanne fedilab on android allow you to do that I think, but the project is a bit iffy (their ethics is questionable at best).
@host @425suzanne yeah, that's the only one I'm aware of on Android (which is my mobile platform, sorry, no idea on iPhone). It came up in a Tusky GitHub discussion recently about this and it was the one good example of the functionality.
@425suzanne it may make sense to run your own paid instance and use that to determine who you are federated with. It might be less of a headache in the long run, though at a slightly higher cost.

@gravedigger @425suzanne The last I asked Sage, the admin/owner of the dice.camp instance, he wasn't planning on blocking those domain and, it appeared, that you could see tabletop.social from there and tabletop.social could see it.

If you are looking for a place.

@gravedigger I've considered that many times. I'm more worried about the time and effort to properly moderate than the cost... but I've definitely mulled it.
@425suzanne I think it depends on the scale you intend to go for. If it's just a personal one, there's quite a bit less work than if you plan to open it up to a larger community.
Just yourself, a few friends, folks you work with? I don't think that'll be too much work, from what I've read.
@gravedigger good point! i know enough folks in the board game sphere that are looking for a game-centric home that I was thinking about a broader (but not huge) picture.

@425suzanne There is part of me that would like a broader picture collective for board game folks, and there's part of me that wants something more closely clustered around my personal non-negotiables.

I love the local option, and I'd love to have the folks I trust in that local tab. Or maybe just a trusted tab for them.

The federated tab however, is too much. I'd like a step between. or even multiple steps between.

@425suzanne
Basically I want a button I can press that shows me all the recent posts by all the folks who have #boardgames in their bio.

@425suzanne With the flood of journalists now moving to servers that I can't see, I am considering this as well... I'd rather not move, but I need visibility on several instances that are not accessible now...

I'd rather not have to juggle accounts...

@BeardedRogue I'm in a similar boat.
@425suzanne Hey, at least the company on this boat is nice! Out of all of the options, this one has been the one that is the least problematic (better security, a desktop option, a decent phone app now that I am using a third party app), but it also lacks the scope of view that I need...
@BeardedRogue absolutely. i completely get why this instances mods keep a pretty tight lock on servers. I'm definitely not complaining about that. But I also don't judge my friends who went to mastodon.social (I have friends on an art server that's blocked too) and would like to stay connected to them.

@425suzanne exactly! I appreciate the walled off community but need more access to the wider world... I am not sure where I may have a second account pop up... Maybe a more activist oriented instance like kolektiva.social if they'd have me...

wandering.shop seems more writer oriented so likely not right... there are some game design ones that seem more video game oriented, but they might also fit the bill...

@BeardedRogue THAT'S a whole different issue. Finding a secondary or tertiary instance that's a reasonable fit... oof.
@425suzanne I have more money than time these days, so I am not about to start running one, but I am sure that I can find one that I can set up a second account on pretty easily if they have enough space... maybe even on one of the instances banned from here...
@BeardedRogue @425suzanne I was hoping to move to Tabletop Social, since my current instance seems to not care much about updating and I worry about stability. But, if TTS is blocking a large swath of the Fediverse...

@BeardedRogue @425suzanne It's weird as I can still see you.

Can you see this?

@425suzanne let me know if you find one!
@425suzanne Hello Suz, I am new too and do not know much about this yet, but do follow @feditips? They may have answers or thoughts on best way to approach multi instances. I have definitely picked up a few helpful tips from them.
@425suzanne I keep looking for this and it doesn't seem to exist (on iOS at least). Not sure if it's a technical or philosophical reason, but it seems like it would be a very useful feature.
@425suzanne fwiw I've been running my own instance and don't really regret it. The only problem is that some instances (like tabletop.social) are locked down in a way that makes it harder to interact (eg, no public local feed, or requiring acceptance of follow requests from outside the instance). Very reasonable restrictions, but just makes life slightly harder living off-instance.
