I still need someone to explain to me, very slowly and with a minimum of jargon how to use this place as a Twitter replacement, because I'm completely baffled by it.

No jargon at all. It feels a little like Twitter but it really isn't. It's more work to curate your experience but if you put the time in you'll see what you want to see based on who you follow. You can really curate your experience and make it what you want.

Boosts are like retweets
Favorites save posts you want to come back to
There is no quote-tweet equivalent

There are three timelines
Hone is just who you follow, this is where curation pays off
Local is the feed for your instance and will have all the posts from your instance
Federated is a feed of posts from all the people that the folks on your server follow

Search is hashtags only and not plaintext so use them liberally.

You can follow hashtags just like you follow people.

That's the basics as far as my brain spit out just now.

A couple more pointers, most instances have their own content warning culture. I don't agree with a lot of it, such as suggesting POC or the LGBTQ+ community out CWs on discussions about bigotry. So check your instance for its CW policy.

It's a good idea to always use alt text when posting images, just makes everything easier for everyone.
