@DanteTheK9 It isn't a twitter replacement.
Twitter was a global -- intentionally EVERYWHERE -- id amplifier. You shout about what exercises you, and the similarly exercised shout back.
Fediverse is consciously designed to facilitate conversation over shouting. It's not going to be a useful OSI tool, or fundraising, or political, particularly. On purpose.
Think of an instance as a section in the library. The whole is there, but there's an expectation of being aware of taxonomy.
Rummage.
@DanteTheK9
No jargon at all. It feels a little like Twitter but it really isn't. It's more work to curate your experience but if you put the time in you'll see what you want to see based on who you follow. You can really curate your experience and make it what you want.
Boosts are like retweets
Favorites save posts you want to come back to
There is no quote-tweet equivalent

@DanteTheK9
There are three timelines
Hone is just who you follow, this is where curation pays off
Local is the feed for your instance and will have all the posts from your instance
Federated is a feed of posts from all the people that the folks on your server follow
Search is hashtags only and not plaintext so use them liberally.
You can follow hashtags just like you follow people.
That's the basics as far as my brain spit out just now.
@DanteTheK9
A couple more pointers, most instances have their own content warning culture. I don't agree with a lot of it, such as suggesting POC or the LGBTQ+ community out CWs on discussions about bigotry. So check your instance for its CW policy.
It's a good idea to always use alt text when posting images, just makes everything easier for everyone.
@DanteTheK9
Here's my brain's logic...
Meow.social is like one Twitter
Mastodon.social is another
Vulpine.club is yet another
You can follow people in the other Twitters for your personal feed.
The version you are a member of has its "all member feed" along with an "almost all mastodon feed" being available (the "federated" timeline). That one is however somewhat curated. The owner of your version can block complete versions that they find objectionable.
The biggest trick is finding enough people to follow, but like on Twitter you can search topics or just start following people that are boosted/re-tooted by people you follow.
