Hello new followers … it’s apparently purge night on Twitter. If you wouldn’t mind, please introduce yourself if we don’t know each other and I don’t follow you. We all have to make a new community here. Thanks. My intro is pinned.
I can’t help thinking of my days in the restaurant business, where I learned that the restaurateur can improve the landlord’s space, but the landlord keeps the improved space even if he evicts you. I feel like we all improved the hell out of Twitter, but it’s not a space we own, and the new landlord is an asshole. Hopefully a distributed site like this can work, but be mindful of what we own & what we don’t.
@Dbrauer Same for any property you rent. Ultimate control is in the hands of the owner. You can be asked to leave at any time
@Berg make sure what you make you can take with you
@Dbrauer Unfortunately, the decked is stacked against the "common folk." People like Elon will always have the upper hand monetarily. The rest of us can merely show them money isn't everything. I think that's actually happening now.
@Berg weirdly I think there are some reasonable efforts to participate in. Like this one. Distributed money so far is a ponzi but distributed community is worth hoping for.
@Dbrauer 100% agree, and I don't think that is weird. I think of that as normal. The other stuff is weird.
@Dbrauer what's incredible is how closely Musk follows the authoritarian playbook. Oligarch friendly to a regime (Republicans) buys a dominant media site and then remakes it as a megaphone for the regime.
@bcollinsmn_tgot @Dbrauer It's a playbook that has worked forever
@bcollinsmn_tgot there’s no doubt. Some weirdo combo of trump & Tucker Carlson.
@Dbrauer I feel like a lot of the people I enjoy reading/seeing are only on Instagram, which is a bit disappointing. But yeah, trying to find everyone now that Twitter's owner is trying to turn it into a propaganda machine.
@Dbrauer old (and old) follower. Happy to find you here!
@Sheppolly and you! I’m being much more open to following folks here. Glad we connected.
@Dbrauer I foolishly used my irl name on Twitter but I'm a MSP area transit nerd who's an AuDHDer and am actively pursuing a degree in urban studies hopefully at the U this fall, I currently go to inver hills getting my associates degree in political science and I love talking about transit and walkability.
@Thatonebadusername nice to meet you. I’m a pol sci grad from the U myself!
@Thatonebadusername @Dbrauer I graduated from the U’s Urban Studies program! I’m currently a transportation planning grad student at the Humphrey School, feel free to ask questions if you ever have them:)
@Dbrauer Hi David! Follower from the other site. More or less grew up in MN, moved back (Saint Paul this time) after ~20 years away in summer of 2020. Intro is pinned on my profile, but I’m a lawyer (in-house and adjunct prof) and do a family music radio show, among other things.
@billchilds HI BILL I LOVE LAWYERS (well, one in particular)
@Dbrauer Hey, it starts with one and then eventually you kinda like another one and then you have slightly less disdain for a third
@Dbrauer Mpls resident here, first day on Mastodon, actually. Just building a list of journalists / commentators I feel are trustworthy.
@jimdinmn thank you Jim, I’m pleased to be included.
@Dbrauer accidentally moved to S Minneapolis a couple decades ago and it's slowly become home. Make maps and stuff for the state. Have appreciated your insights esp about Mpls politics/issues!
@Dbrauer hi David. I was mauratwit on Twitter. Left the day he officially bought the site. We could see this coming. I’m a lefty living in NE. Nice to see you here!
@NE_Purple_Mom you too! Thanks for connecting, value your community work.
@Dbrauer I take it that you never found a good solution to the mspsocial disagreement?
@jmarthaler punted that one. We’re still in the first inning. Mostly recruiting via Twitter. When I move fully here I’ll probably find a cooler instance.

@Dbrauer @jmarthaler

There's an obvious contingent here for a Minnesota/MSP focused community that's less walled-in than MSP.Social but on good terms with it

@Dbrauer hey...you're my first follow over here. Just joined after the journalist purge this evening. I'm an educator here in MN. Been following you for a couple of years on the other site....appreciate your commentary and sense of humor
@Mwalimuanderson thank you! Will follow back to experience yours!
@Dbrauer I’ve followed you for ages on twitter and am not sure where to go next. Feels like I built a really cool house of cards there and suddenly an asshole showed up to pick the best cards off one by one. Probably can’t recreate the house but hope to find some good cards along the way of picking up
@Dbrauer Greetings David - another old (and old) follower. Glad you made the jump.
@gcaase wait who you callin old
@Dbrauer Getting a feel for the site tonight.
@Dbrauer Suburban MSP guy. Moderate, former Republican (prior to 2016, but always moderate and socially moderate to liberal). Anonymous for multiple reasons, mostly professional.
@Dbrauer I’ve followed you forever on Twitter, as well as Minneapolis issues.
@DavidMiklethun glutton for something but thanks!
@Dbrauer hey Dave, I'm a normal dude from mpls that followed you on Twitter (justkozz) for awhile! I'm more of a scroller than poster, so you might not recognize me!
@Dbrauer Hi! I'm Carly, I work at Our Streets Minneapolis and am interested in electrification, climate and racial justice, and all things Twin Cities. I was a Twitter follower and decided to migrate today when so many journalists were suspended.

@Dbrauer Hey. Same person here as there. Loved your pod with Britt and your politics.

Also babysat your niece a couple times and was in your Brother-in-law's plays... So that's weird.

@Dbrauer Yo. Steve from Bloomington.
@Dbrauer Hi! I go by Jiahong but otherwise known as Henry in the past. Freelance journalist who covers transportation issues and sometimes criminal Justice.
@Dbrauer I’m bob. you know me from such places as twitter, loons games and Twins daily events.
@Dbrauer I followed you on the other place. Reside in SW MPLS. Unfortunate Minnesota sports fan. I miss you and Britt talking Wolves.
@tool8485 hello again. Have sworn off the wolves sadly, this year was final straw.
@Dbrauer longtime follower here, have probably interacted a time or two over Mpls election nerdery? I’m straikat on Twitter. Try to stay low key on social media in general, but I’m an avid lurker.

@Dbrauer

Not a new follower here, but for the record I'm in the Twin Cities as well. Saint Paul side, although I cross the river professionally.

IT, but public sector, which makes me more of an odd one out amongst the various tech folks here on Mastodon. I still know how to make iPads sit up and behave by the thousands.

@Dbrauer hi I'm Jesse. We don't know each other but I used to work at MPR doing market research stuff. Occasionally you would write stories about radio ratings and I would have to pull together some data for Chris Worthington so he could be ready to talk to you. So that's my weird connection 😅
@Dbrauer Hey there! Follow you on the bird site. Fellow Minnesotan. Welcome :)
@Dbrauer Hello! I’m an educator who lives in Saint Paul. Have enjoyed your thoughts and commentary! Here because I needed to start the migration over after tonight…
@Dbrauer hey David, I’m Kari 👋🏼 recovering public media employee and south Minneapolis resident. trying this out for a bit and looking for folks to follow!
@krosnest hi Kari thanks for the follow
@Dbrauer hi Brett. Fellow Minnesotan. I liked your podcast
@Dbrauer Hi David. Followed you on the other site. Told you about my Halloween Blizzard story yesterday in fact. Figured you would be a good first follow over here while I figure it out.
@Dbrauer also followed you on the other site and appreciate your observations and thoughts on local issues. A northeast metro resident currently but used to live in DT Minneapolis and east side St. Paul. Long-time gov worker in HR for different agencies.
@nasinmn thanks nas looking forward to convos
