I don’t know who needs to hear this right now (*cough* academics *cough*) but you really shouldn’t fear your employer, manager, supervisor, PI.
They should be putting in the effort to create a safe and supportive work environment for you.

@Nicole_Betz it was such an epiphany when I realized that managers are generally expected to enable and remove blockers for their direct reports

@calebsponheim for real! this is not at all what I thought managers were supposed to do until I left academia!! No wonder so many academics are so deadset on “being their own manager”

@Nicole_Betz the most common thing that crosses over from industry to academia is often the concept of “managing up”; it’s a useful framework but puts even MORE pressure on the academic!!
