Who else notices that—compared to other social media services—more people interact with you on Mastodon?

What everyone seems to agree on is that the gamification of Big Social throttles human interactions.

It's almost as though, when you're not focused on playing a game, you're more likely to speak to real humans.

@atomicpoet I could see this as being the driver as well. But also a more civil community means that replying to a big account carries less risk. No one is out looking to pick fights in the responses to viral posts

@atomicpoet I feel like for me this is due to the more communal feeling of the fediverse. Twitter feels like a huge place with everyone screaming for attention, but here it feels more like people doing their own thing. No idea if this is supported by facts or just in my head tho..

I think this is also because of the federated model - having the local view makes it more likely there will be eyes on your post, and that someone will want to interact with it.

@atomicpoet People must have been saving some clicks for all the ads
@atomicpoet Definitely! Better quality and quantity of conversation. Refreshing.
@atomicpoet absolutely. I had a few posts go viral on Twitter which hasn’t been replicated here BUT I’ve had more interactions and replies here than just reposts and likes.
@atomicpoet yes. For me, there’s more incentive to interact when there’s no algorithm upranking/downranking replies based on follower counts or little badges. The ideas matter more than the speaker.
@atomicpoet It’s just because I wasn’t on Twatter. :)

@atomicpoet I find there's a lot more interaction here. I figure a large part of it is the fact that there's no algorithm to boost the "big" accounts, which means that people who follow me are more likely to see my posts.

(After all, if the algorithm boosts posts, it has to be at someone's expense)

@atomicpoet Umm Nope. it's about the same?
@atomicpoet Indeed. Even though I have far fewer followers here, my posts get a lot more likes. Over there it's winner take all. Here it's more egalitarian.
@atomicpoet yes I’ve noticed it. More actual interaction in a few weeks than probably the past year on The other place.
@atomicpoet

That’s why I’m here! ヽ(^o^)丿
@atomicpoet I’ve really noticed this. I feel like one of the cool kids for once.
@atomicpoet MUCH more. I think I might be interacting at least as much here now as FriendFeed, Google+, and early Twitter combined in 2009-11. And in fact this is the only place I've had a post go viral.
@atomicpoet completely the opposite for me
@EHirschman I suspect that I know why.
@atomicpoet do tell 🤨

@EHirschman Your account is basically a link aggregator for Mr. Rogers with almost zero context.

On Mastodon, people aren't looking to passively look at stuff, they're looking to chat.

@EHirschman @atomicpoet Try this. Look at a couple of hashtags you like. Now follow 15 people from at least 5 of them. Then interact with the people you’ve followed. If you just feel like stating an opinion add one relevant hashtag. Do an #introduction post & hashtag 7 things that interest you. Give it a day and see if you feel differently. You are the #algorithm here. Make your experience what you want.🥰
@Pineywoozle thank you, that's quite helpful. I may have just forgotten how long it took to have any kind of meaningful following/follower interaction going on my Twttr account when I started it.
@EHirschman Glad it helped.🥰👍 We just need to be the algorithm we want to experience.😉
@atomicpoet agreed. What is also missing, at least for me, is the urge to “check in”. I come in and out of here FAR less frequently than previously elsewhere. That’s a good thing. When here, interaction is much better.
@atomicpoet True indeed. And in a positive way. No verbal fights but discussion.

@atomicpoet I have no idea how it stacks up in terms of how many people interact with me. I’m not being shown numbers all the time, so I’m just not thinking of it that way. It’s a relief. I love it.

I’ve been making a conscious effort to reply more often when I have the time and brain for it. It’s far less taxing than on platforms like twitter or tumblr, since I’m way less stressed. It’s among the most rewarding things to do on Mastodon, because conversation is its own reward. Other kinds of interactions don’t feel inflated in importance so much that they eclipse human connection. It also doesn’t seem like being disruptive or shitty for its own sake is nearly as likely to be rewarding, so people just don’t do that as much. Replying to things doesn’t feel like making a commitment to potentially do conversational battle, which can be fun sometimes but not too often, and definitely not on the blue hell sites with their ruinously high stakes.

@atomicpoet Quality over quantity for sure.
@atomicpoet Yes, to some extent. If I posted something on Musk's Folly (MF), either no one would respond, or just strange people who wanted to argue. That situation is better. I don't find extended conversations here as I did on MF, and sometimes that's ok.

@atomicpoet

only been about 45 days...

I will feel more confident to answer in a couple more months

@atomicpoet I've been noticing a lot more interaction in the month I've been here - both in terms of responses to my posts, and my willingness to respond. People here are generally having good faith discussions, which helps 🙂
