Can you all do me a small favor and respond to (or like, if you're more comfortable) this message (toot?) when you see it? Just trying to get a feel for how frequently people are actually on this thing...
@aschweig wednesday, 6:30 p.m., Southwestern Virginia
@aschweig generally don't respond to anyone who doesn't have a profile and a bunch of hashtags to identify their interest areas
@BobStep so you saw this message in some kind of public feed somewhere?
@aschweig just hit the newsy.social feed icon out of boredom
@BobStep what, and you're an old-time musician? c'mon, that's not chance...
@aschweig like I said, hashtags are the way to go
@aschweig so where are you and what is your music connection?
@BobStep I am in Pittsburgh and a banjo player (mostly)
@aschweig that sounds socially acceptable ;-)
I'm about five and a half hours due south of you. Augusta Heritage Workshop fan, Clifftop a little, went to UNC grad school instead of Carnegie Mellon because Chapel Hill came up with Fellowship money first. And the girlfriend from Pittsburgh wasn't that interested anyway.
@BobStepno heading your way this week actually on a road trip (my first overnight is in asheville on sunday)
@aschweig the multi-headed one that means local community, since I am on newsy.social myself.. but most of my contacts and interesting conversations have been with musicians while I try to find like-minded music and journalism folks in Southwestern Virginia using this platform. There ain't many.
@BobStep Interesting...I was assuming hashtags would be similarly useless as they on twitter now, but it makes sense since this thing is newer/smaller that they'd still be somewhat useful
@aschweig they work as social networking across servers

@aschweig Give a few a try in an #Introduction post... #ClawHammerBanjo
#banjo #BanjoUkulele
#FolkMusic
#OldTimeHerald

Theory is the capital letters make these composite words readable by #ScreenReaders. I don't use one myself, so I don't know for sure that it does the job, but it can't hurt.

@aschweig Boop. I follow @BobStep . So, his posts and comments get federated out my instance (libra net.de). When he comments on someone else’s post (like yours), their post gets pulled into my feed. Also, your post is now available to all users on my instance. So, if you had hashtagged your post, anyone on my instance who follows that hashtag would see you post on their feed. I’ll add one for you: #newhere
@alysonsee @aschweig Thanks for explaining how that works! I'm still being surprised by new connections everyday. But I go back and search on my own hashtags looking for more... and then memories happen that caused me to search for something from 30 years ago!
It's like we are weaving some huge intricate tapestry, one hashtag on top of another.
@aschweig 'sup, buddy?
@jordanhirsch just trying this mast-o-don thing out. how's it going over there?

@aschweig
Pretty good, thanks! I made a bunch of major life changes this year (left my job, went out on my own as a coach and facilitator), and just recently left Twitter. I'm liking it over here.

How are you?

@aschweig Have either of you watched the Ken Burns’ documentary “Country Music”. I’m about halfway through. I’m a fan of live bluegrass and not so much country, western, honky tonk, or rockabilly. But I loved the old footage they had of a shy, 12 yo Brenda Lee, looking like she wasn’t quite sure what she was doing on a stage, and then she opened her mouth and growled out a swingin’ tune like a woman who had seen some things.
