A few things about Sam Bankman-Fried's first court appearance in the Bahamas, which Josh and I discuss in detail in the episode about to drop: (1) this was a provisional arrest, meaning without the full formal extradition package, which is onerous. That's due within 60 days, hence his February court date. (2) It's typical to hold the provisionally arrested without bail . . ..
...one reason being that it would be a diplomatic problem for Country A to request extradition and Country B to arrest the person but bail them and then have them flee. So it's very common to be detained pre-extradition.

@Popehat
It's going to be very unpleasant for SBF if he's held without bail. From the WSJ:

"Fox Hill inmates reported removing human waste by buckets and developing bed sores from lying on the bare ground, according to a 2021 human-rights report on the Bahamas by the U.S. State Department. Cells were also infested with rats, maggots and insects, the report said."

@kims @Popehat That is terrible and I am sad anyone has be held that way, but I strongly suspect that is not how they hold the rich.
@tancread @kims @Popehat pretty sure he's drastically cutting back on spending.
