Brace yourself...

The long-standing chants of “Having the app store locked down is what makes iOS secure!!1!” are about to change to “Having multiple app stores shows how Apple is leading the way in choice and innovation!!1!”

Apple to Allow Outside App Stores in Overhaul Spurred by EU Laws

Apple Inc. is preparing to allow alternative app stores on its iPhones and iPads, part of a sweeping overhaul aimed at complying with strict European Union requirements coming in 2024.

@jr In the latest edition of Apple invents a feature Android users have enjoyed for several years...
@jr I've been using Google's phones (Pixel, Nexus) for the last many years, but even when I had a Samsung, I was never keen on using their app store. It always felt like using your ISPs provided email address rather than a Gmail (or hotmail or whatever) email address - you're really locking yourself in unnecessarily.
@Quentin Couldn't agree more.
@jr Actually back when I had my original Samsung Galaxy S (2010! 😲), They gave you, was it Tom Tom GPS? One of the well known car GPS brands anyway - for free, and it was better than early Google maps at the time for directions, and otherwise cost $50 on Google (was it Marketplace back then?) - so that was a good deal. That's the only app I can recall using from an app store other than Google's.
@jr This should've been the headline 😂
@MichaelBTech I am 100% on board with this notion.

@jr We already know Epic will make an App Store, but who else? Will we see a Play Store on iOS? Flutter already bridges the gap and lowers development time on apps.

I'm INCREDIBLY interested to see what happens with Messaging on iOS.

We all know the moment you can change the default messaging app on iOS, Apple's stronghold on consumers will begin to unshackle.

@MichaelBTech Interesting questions, all. This oughta be a fun little experiment to watch, eh?

uh huh
that was #cern

They only repackage and make accessible.

And Android n Linux are still 1000000% superior...

@jr Brace yourself for 20M iPhones to be infected with viruses in the first week!
@jr @denise Definitely a huge shift for Apple and iOS. As @briannawu has tweeted: "More choice comes at the expense of security."
