Yesterday had an honest-to-god-holy-shit moment. Googled for an answer, got a list of pages upon pages of links.

ChatGPT answered the question (correctly, btw) clearly, and even managed to answer three follow-ups with impressive detail. (And helped me re-think how to phrase the original query, to see what else Google might unearth.)

I realize that ChatGPT can be hit or miss; and I also understand that it can be just as confident in its wrong answers. Still: incredible moment.

@rklau my experience is that it's been pretty good, and certainly on par with Google, which often serves up garbage now, and in the case of tech Qs specifically, significantly better.
@dansinker @rklau Agree on poorer results over time but feels like the “Google is missing the boat” crowd is way off. I have a deep feeling that Google is probably wrestling with the ethical rollout of this tech (or making sure it can scale) rather than completely missing the tech.

@shellen @dansinker yeah, from what I gather Google has something similar-ish in-house that's both impressive and at times unsettling. (Wasn't this what the 'it's sentient!' kerfuffle was all about?)

Would be funny if ChatGPT made it safer for Google to release a Labs-like test
