I read an older comment in which Noel Gallagher of Oasis had been critical of The Beach Boys. This naturally triggered a certain amount of indignation but I'm not entirely sure he's wrong.

The Beach Boys did have some remarkable vocal melodies and production values and Pet Sounds is a seminal album but beyond that, I've never seen them as particularly innovative. Just my opinion. Doesn't mean I don't enjoy queueing up Little Deuce Coupe or Surfin' USA now and then. #Music #aswesomeplaylists

Surfing USA, which copied, note for note, Chuck Berry's Sweet Little Sixteen indicates they weren't particularly innovative.

Without Chuck Berry, these 10 famous rock songs would not exist

Since the 1950s, when Berry first started producing his signature blend of music that combined a rhythm and blues beat with country twang, rockers have begged, borrowed and stolen from the legendary musician. Some have even been sued for allegedly doing so. And a number of the most persistently popular rock songs carry his direct influence -- be it through guitar licks, riffs, lyrics, storytelling or attitude. Here are 10 of them.

@SharonGibson3 Holy smoke, I didn't realize that but you're right. A lot of bands were derivative (I'm looking at you Led Zeppelin) but few actually went so far as a straight up copy.
