One disadvantage of Pixel's "smart" camera: sometimes it won't let you do what you want. In this example I wanted to use my telephoto lens to take a picture of Honey. By default it refused to use my telephoto lens (left) and I had to trick it to use it (right).
It's clear that the best result here was with the telephoto lens, and I knew that. I shouldn't have to trick my camera app into letting me use it. The 'trick' btw is to focus on something in the distance before moving it back to the subject.
You can clearly see with the first shot where an algorithm has tried to improve the photo to make it sharper, etc. But it doesn't compare to the results from the telephoto lens (and accompanying sensor).
