@RuthieB yeah, English football culture has a long, deeply depressing association with hooliganism that I'm sure contributes heavily to this. I don't know this, but wouldn't surprise me if there's a strong correlation in general between major sports games and abuse, no matter the country; aggressive, high-stakes pastimes based on physical force attract a certain type of person.
I wish I saw more high-profile athletes speaking out against this.
