MAME now supports emulating an East German numbers station speech generator, if that's something you need to have handy for any reason

@revenant is "funnunf" a phonetic legibility thing, or just a synth artifact?

@gsuberland good question

there are some recordings of the real hardware in the wild but I'm not sure offhand if it's actually meant to sound like that

@gsuberland ok yeah you can hear the real thing pronouncing it the same way in this vid https://youtu.be/tFm7Q9-17w0?t=82

i guess it's probably just for clarity, like how it says "zwo" instead of "zwei" and pronounces 9 more like "neuen"

@gsuberland @revenant it's "fünnef" and yes that's a (west german, old) way to pronounce the number five

@revenant This is gonna end up in every creepy ARG made by HS students in like three weeks.

(It's awesome)

@futurebird or maybe a DEFCON side village... or bootleg numbers station that happens to show up near Vegas...
@revenant I don't ever want to see it running in a cabinet, but MAME is an absolute treasure.

@revenant For fun, I downloaded the speech rom dumps from the crypto museum, and did a tiny bit of massaging to generate this.
@revenant More on Gerät 32620, the East German numbers station voice synthesiser now emulated in MAME:
https://www.cryptomuseum.com/spy/owvl/32620/
It appears to be based on (an Eastern-bloc knockoff of) the Z80, and the UI uses more English words than I expected an Eastern-bloc spy device to. (Perhaps German words take up too much space?)
