I don't think #SoldierflySaturday is a thing, but maybe it should be! This is one of the smaller species: a male of Beris morrisii (Yellow-legged Black Legionnaire), with its burgundy red eyes. Often found at the edges of woodland, widespread but more frequent in the south. #insectodon #flies #Diptera

@greenaspen @kitenet Thank you! It is outside my normal geographic area (photographed on a trip to the Northeastern US) but posting it to iNaturalist some very helpful folks identified it as Oxycera albovittata.

@JohnCarlson @kitenet TY 🙏 I don’t think that species occurs this side of the Atlantic, although there a a couple of similar looking Oxycera’s which are on UK ‘red’ list of endangered spp. can’t say I’ve seen any of them.
