Gotta say this was not the result I was expecting!
Also, when we lost film, we lost having tons of these around.
@alexwild Punch a few holes in the top and a perfect holder for wax worms when ice fishing.
@alexwild I feel like there's an untapped market for a plastics manufacturer to just make these. I don't need film, just give me the handy snap top canisters!
@alexwild
I still use them while camping, for salt, pepper and dried herbs.

@alexwild I happened to notice in another poll that many here are millennials or older, given that context, this one adds up.
@harshad @alexwild Yeah. Anyone over 30 is nearly guaranteed to have taken their first photos on film.
@alexwild Must be a bunch of us "old" people around here πŸ˜€ I still have notes from a black and white seminar at a local, long gone, photography shop. Developing black and white by hand was a lot of fun but not sure I'd want to return to doing that on a regular basis.
@alexwild Try this poll on TikTok, likely a different outcome.

@alexwild: Given that all age surveys on the Fediverse I saw so far (saw at least 3 or 4) show that the majority (around half of the user) is between 40 and 55 years old or so, this is probably less of an surprise.

Besides my own cheap analog disc-film based compact camera (c.f. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disc_film), I started taking photographs with the #Canon AE-1 of my father. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_AE-1)

Nowadays I'm happy with my #Nikon Coolpix #S9900. (Sad that it seems to have no successor.)

@alexwild back in the days of the box camera
@capnthommo @alexwild Had an Olympus stylus zoom film camera that remains one of my favorites. Lost it at Disney World. Next (and all subsequent) camera was digital.
@alexwild I liked Fuji for nature shots since it processed with a slightly green hue
@alexwild I remember playing around with my father's twin-lens reflex camera, before me and my brothers got a 'cheap' rangefinder. πŸ™‚
@alexwild but honestly, I didn’t learn composition until I got my first digital point and shoot. #photography
@alexwild mastodon either skews quite a bit older, or there’s a bunch of people being very flexible with the truth in this poll. πŸ˜…

@alexwild I feel like there might be a sampling bias in polling Mastodon (the greater fediverse, potentially) for this, but I don't think this one surprised me as much.

The people who tend to be here reminisce about an internet that didn't suck because we remember it. I feel like we would remember film the same way.

I wonder what this poll, performed against TikTok's target demographic would yield.

@alexwild

film + darkroom (lots of time spent on yearbook committees in high school and college)
