Any opinions I could share regarding the #raspberrypi situation have been well and truly covered by now, but I do want to say: Netbooks! They made *so* many of them and they've just been floating around pawn shops and junk drawers for years.
They'll run pretty much anything that a Pi could, and come with a case, a screen, a keyboard/mouse, and an inbuilt UPS. Some of the most popular were built with Linux in mind, but even those that weren't have got drivers by now.
If you're a #maker, you probably don't need to contribute to landfills full of e-waste by buying brand new boards for one-off #projects. The hardware already exists and just needs a bit of love.
