@danjones000 @internetarchive I think that it hasn't all been in the PD. Because Conan-Doyle wrote the books over such a long period, only some were in PD and the remaining books were jealously guarded by the estate.

There's some great insight to this convoluted story in The Life and Death of Sherlock Holmes. It's a fascinating read into the real world (books, TV, movies, business and societies) around the fiction if you're into that kind of thing.
