Everyone against increased road safety features (like separated bike lanes) should have to do what I did on Sunday night:

Sit in an ER for hours next to a scooter rider in severe pain because they were run into by a car hard enough to flip them onto the hood of the car, as the doctor explained that they really needed to wear this neck brace despite the pain it caused because he was afraid that they might become paralyzed otherwise.

Might change some minds.

@crschmidt bones okay? sounds like a job for ibuprofen and muscle relaxers.

also good for you, hope they're healing okay.

stupid drivers.

@dr2chase This wasn't someone I knew, just someone I ended up being in a hallway next to (because that's how life is in the ER these days), but my impression is that "no, it is not at all clear that the bones are okay". They were waiting on imaging to check for spinal injuries before they could move on towards figuring out what other surgical interventions were needed.

@crschmidt Oh, shit. Soft tissue just needs a rest, the meds (experience from my youth, header into a flower bed) just relax you so that your tensing from the pain doesn't make it worse.

Stupid cars.

@crschmidt Jesus. Glad you’re on the mend.
@s_bosbach I was lucky to just be in the ER as a partner to my wife (who ended up with acute symptoms that were thankfully non-urgent to treat after review, though she's got followups scheduled now); but even more lucky to not be involved in any way in what seemed like a terrible accident that did a really bad number on the person in question.
@crschmidt Ah got it. Sorry to hear it. Hope all goes well with her followups.
