I'm hosting a webinar about trust and safety on the fediverse this Thursday, Dec 8th at 12pm Eastern. It's an introduction to the state of content moderation and community safety here.

I hope it will be useful to people at civil society organizations who have perhaps heard about Mastodon and the fediverse and would like to know more about where there are gaps in funding and services, and places where orgs could potentially help augment what's already happening.

Webinar: Trust and safety on the fediverse

We are happy to invite you to attend a webinar hosted by Darius Kazemi, an engineer at Meedan who for five years has been writing about the fediverse and writing software for its users. He will be joined by content moderation expert Kat Lo and security expert Aaron Huslage.

If you work at an organization for public benefit and have thought "I wish more people here knew what was going on in the fediverse" ... you should pass this on to them!
There will not be a recording of this session -- in part because it's my first time running it! Don't worry, there will be plenty of asynchronous content around this available in the near future, just not a recording of this one.
@darius Bummer. I won't be able to join in since I work at a call center. 😭 I'm interested as at some point I'm spinning up my own instance so I can bully my friends into joining us here 🤣
@darius This sounds like a timely and important conversation. Do you know if this will be recorded for the benefit of those unable to attend the live webinar?
@Eliot_L Probably not -- there will be some recorded output from this but likely not a straight-up recording of the session. (Maybe a future recorded session after I get feedback on how helpful/unhelpful this was from attendees.)

@darius passed to the New_ Public team !
@darius I'm excited about being there. Have you held an event like this since the Muskpocalypse began? I bet at least a couple of dozen in my graph alone will be there. Thanks for doing it!
@shoq Nope, this is the first one!
@darius Hopefully the first of many. If there's a good time for thought-leaders, this be it.
@darius I'm going to share this with people I work with. Also, I'm just now learning about Meedan from your site. What a great organization!
@darius
Hope this can cover (and maybe another time, represent) some of the #BlackFedi critiques and challenges (esp #BlackTwitter switching experiences).
@schuyler1d I will be touching on it, but not for very long (40 minutes is not a long time)
@darius very excited for this!
@darius damn. I have a meeting at exactly that time that I can’t miss. It’s a Zoom meeting, though, so I think I’m going to try to attend yours on my iPad and just nod thoughtfully at what people in my other meeting are saying.
@darius "Eastern" (#timezone) could mean several different countries and actual times. For an #international audience, please add #GMT or #UTC, from which the rest of us can calculate.
I don't want Orwellian "trust and safety" on my fediverse.

If you want to be lorded over by people who consider themselves your betters, big tech is that way 👉

@darius heads-up that the *blog* post https://meedan.com/post/webinar-trust-and-safety-on-the-fediverse does not seem to link anywhere to the event page

(I was thinking "instead of digging through my Mastodon bookmarks/etc. to find the URL to email to someone, I'll just go through the Meedan front page")

Webinar: Trust and safety on the fediverse

@brainwane if you have privacy-blocking stuff turned on in your web browser it won't render the embedded RSVP form at the bottom :/

@darius No, that's not what I'm saying.

The event page https://meedan.com/event/webinar-trust-and-safety-on-the-fediverse shows me the RSVP form fine.

There's a blog post https://meedan.com/post/webinar-trust-and-safety-on-the-fediverse , *separate* from the event page, that is much easier to find from the Meedan front page because it's an entry within https://meedan.com/blog .

That blog post doesn't link to the event page.

@darius

Will it be recorded somewhere for folks who wouldn't be able to make that time?

@serge no but there will be a version of the same content that will be made available on our website at some point after the event (something more accessible than a recorded webinar)

@darius

*grumble* I wish I'd known this before I literally just moved a meeting to this time. :)

(not your fault just 30 minutes ago I scheduled something, now I have to see if I can unschedule)

@darius Sigh. I was about to come here and ask if anyone else was having trouble joining and realized that I somehow put it on my calendar for 2pm EST rather than 12pm EST. I was really looking forward to it 😞
@timnitGebru @darius doh I messed up the time too.
@stefan I will post a more permanent-reference version in the coming weeks!

@timnitGebru Oh dang! There is a nice summary thread an attendee made here, and I will be posting a more permanent blog and/or video of it in the coming weeks
