As Greg Sargent of the Washington Post points out...

https://washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/12/02/kevin-mccarthy-jan-6-committee-protect-trump/

...simply to call it a "counter-investigation" is too credulous. House Republicans have not shown there is anything to investigate.

So let's try a rewrite. Instead of "the G.O.P. is planning its own counter-investigation" how about...

"McCarthy's letter was the latest sign that the G.O.P. is struggling to find any factual basis on which to investigate the Jan. 6 investigation."

Kevin McCarthy reveals exactly how the GOP House will protect Trump

Get ready for a massive smear campaign designed to discredit revelations about Jan. 6.

The Washington Post

@jayrosen_nyu It’s yet another sinister form of NYT both-sides-ing. One side has an investigation? The other side has a counter-investigation.

In actuality, one side has nearly completed an investigation and the other side will now attempt to sabotage and discredit it.

@JamesGleick

Correct.

@jayrosen_nyu @JamesGleick Never has the U.S. population needed to have been trained in critical thinking more than this moment.
