Dear #Americans of #Mastodon, you have a wonderful opportunity that is rarely granted to you. For the first time, you're in an online public space that is not American, that is not centered around the US, and as I'm typing this, a place where the majority of users are not Americans. You can open yourselves to the world as you've rarely been able to before.

So please, stop expressing yourselves like the US is the default country here and that most users are Americans. We're not. Love.

@davidb So we are not allowed to discuss things important to America. If so, I made a very big mistake of opening this account. I'm interested in what's going on in America.

@KathyBadger @davidb

Hey, fellow Hoosier here! 🤘😄

I believe the idea being put forth by the OP is not "don't talk about US stuff"; rather, it's "don't assume everyone else is in the US, and/or relates to/cares about US stuff."

@KathyBadger This is not what I'm saying.

As @decompiler pointed out, it's about not assuming everyone here is American.

You know, with things like saying "people" when you mean "American people" or talking about "<insert topic here>" when you mean "<insert topic here in America>" and so on.

It's about remembering that the US is just one country among around 200 others when talking about things. Not the only one, not even the main one or the most important one. Just one among many.
