Corporations are using inflation to justify massive price hikes, but are then using their record profits to buy back shares of their own stock and boost share prices.

It’s a scam that transfers wealth from the wallets of working people into the pockets of CEOs and shareholders.

@rbreich - When will Americans realize that capitalism is a scam that transfers wealth from the labor of working people into the pockets of CEOs and shareholders.
@rickladd @rbreich Unchecked capitalism for sure. There is benefits to the system but people need to be given the same guard rails cooperations benefit from.
@curiousmuch @rbreich
Seems to me the best check on capitalism is to put ownership in the hands of those whose labor produces the wealth. Make them the primary shareholders. They're already the primary stakeholders.
@rbreich and how can this corrupt system be fixed????
@LadyLiberty5591 @rbreich
Taxation and voting progressively - sadly soon the global climate breakdown will force this upon all of us anyways, unless we want to go down with the ship we are on ...
@rbreich It is amazing how the right bamboozles their base saying they are for the people but then all their actions only benefit the wealthy and the corporations. Actually throwing the people to the nonexistent mercy of the corporations.
@rbreich But they are the job creators! /S
@rbreich The Trump tariffs and trade wars inflated materials costs by increasing scarcity. The manufacturers leaned on the retailers who shrunk product sizes and cheapened products to avoid going past the consumer set points but then COVID happened, just in time manufacturing and delivery issues happened, and the consumer set points were breached now the companies are all what the heck, the damage is done, who cares about losing product loyalty? Let us gouge. How do we reverse that?
@rbreich it's all about trickle up economics. Everything. The gap widens and widens
@rbreich a very common practice of capitalism and neoliberalism.
@rbreich inflation which was spurred by supply chain disruptions which were exacerbated by high concentration/consolidation in almost every industry. We gotta do something about what is essentially #oligopoly
@rbreich yet another example of how capitalism is the pinnacle of exploitation. It’s a garbage system that breeds sociopaths, narcissists and psychopaths. So to all the “Christians” and “law abiding citizens” There’s nothing right, fair or lawful about it, yet these “good Christians” defend it vehemently. No amount of “we’re Christians who love Jesus” and flags is going to cover up their bullshit personality until they actually start following what the Bible teaches. That party is so delusional and arrogant, that they think they know more than the god they preach that tells them violence is a sin, hate is a sin, lying is a sin, exploitation is hubris, a sin. Etc.
I think it’s important whenever they use religion as their cover up, which it unequivocally is, that we point out, “did god tell you to vote against or support votes against baby formula shortage and purposely withhold and lie about the shortage? That’s Christian? Did God tell you to demand profits at the peak of a world wide killer virus? Is that Christian? Did God tell you to promote white supremacy? That’s Christian? Did god tell you to be sexist and racist? That’s also a Christian value?Did God tell you to exploit manipulate and scam people? Are those the Bible teachings and values you are following? Or are you saying you know better than god?”
By calling them out .every.single.time, we also disarm them from brainwashing more and more people to believe they are “good” and disarm their bullshit tactic for votes, campaign contributions and moral high ground that they don’t give two shits about, and contradict daily. Hold them accountable and reveal them for the nazi trash they are. People need to flood their comments and post these counters to their religious claims.
@rbreich and also laying people off while they bring in those record profits. Corporations shouldn’t even exist to only make profits. They should exist equally for the reason of providing employment and benefits to people that live in society.
@rbreich let's make America fair again!
@rbreich they should be made illegal, or taxed excessively.
@rbreich but our Congress with supposedly highly experienced people (dinosaurs) on both sides, are too stupid (or too greedy) to do anything about it. The President also does nothing but whine about it.
@rbreich iat the risk of sounding conspiracy theory-like, should the media bare some responsibility in propagating this corporate profit fest?
Every news hour for months has been talking about inflation, blaming politics, and not calling out the actual causes - paving the way for corporate opportunism
@rbreich it's no wonder the French had a revolution.
@rbreich the product is the company and the perceived shareholder value. Not the product or the service the company produces. Employees are hired, compensated, and let go based upon shareholder value. The question is, how do you change those marker forces?
@rbreich Also they will optimize headcount in the process.
@rbreich we’ve known this for decades. Why is it still allowed?
@rbreich I live in Hawaii. We have not seen any drop in price of gas. It is still over $5. Matson gouges, oil companies gouge, trucking firms gouge and retailers gouge, yet no one does anything about it. This is a solid Democratic state, you would think the party would tell them to put the thumb screws on the gougers, but no. The gouging funds the politicians.
@rbreich This is the logical endgame of the shareholder-centric corporation: it doesn’t exist to make things or provide services; it exists to provide an income stream to owners, full stop. Take the railroads, for example: Laying off 30% of workers and abusing those that remain with “just in time scheduling” in no way improves railroads’ function of moving things and people across the country. It does, however, enhance the income stream, which is all that matters. #Capitalism

@rbreich I'm not an expert but I don't agree entirely with that statement.
That corporations are opportunistic and one of the goals of any business is to reward shareholders, yes absolutely.

But due to rising inflation and risk of recession, stocks crashed massively this year, making it a low risk/reward investment for profitable companies.

@rbreich we need a graduated Corporate income tax.
@rbreich Thanks for posting this more accurate info on corporate tactics that increase inflation prices for us all.

@rbreich how does this long thread not have a mention of Rep. Katie Porter's chat showing most off inflation is corporate profit?

https://www.politicususa.com/2022/10/22/factcheckers-agree-with-katie-porter-and-her-whiteboard-that-corporate-profits-drive-inflation-price-increases.html

Factcheckers Agree With Katie Porter And Her Whiteboard That Corporate Profits Drive Inflation Price Increases

Katie Porter's whiteboard got factchecked, and guess what. She is correct that corporate profits are behind inflation.

PoliticusUSA
@rbreich been a thing for decades, why we're still discussing it as a thing is odd for sure.
@rbreich as an economist can you help me understand the logic of killing the housing market to curb inflation? It doesn’t seem to be working and now no one can sell their house.
@rbreich America isn’t a country anymore, the rule of law is selective and Democracy is only applicable when convenient for the corporate rule and elites. America is a lawless corporation.
@rbreich
Wasn’t it illegal to buy back stock before Reagan?
@rbreich it’s the “new Coke” introduction vs “original Coke” playbook.
@rbreich they can no longer borrow the money to buy back their stock so they had to stick their customers with the bill.
