Despite how sharks are portrayed in movies and reality tv, here’s what to remember 🦈

Sharks kill 5-10 humans each year.

Humans kill ~100 million sharks each year (and that’s a conservative estimate).

Many species are now threatened with extinction.

Don’t fear sharks. Protect them. #SharedPlanet

@Sheril Killing any creation of God is a crime. Why not co-exist in harmony with all creations of God?🤔
Any convincing reason?🤔

@Sheril Thank you for the post, sadly it gives me the chance to share one of the best infographics I have ever seen:

@Sheril I still hate em tho
@Sheril sharks have been known to be grateful and even bring other sharks to humans who have aided them. Sharks aren't the problem.

@Sheril

"Irrational Fears is what drives most killing perpetuated by humans. What drives those irrational fears seems to be people afraid of losing power and authority over other people." ~ Not Spock

@Sheril yes! so many perceived as apex predators like orca, wolves, sea otters, & others are vulnerable because of the antapex predator...

humans

we're like toxic pond scum

@Sheril Humans also kill more humans than sharks. Just saying. Perspective.
@Sheril I fear humans waaaaaay more than sharks (I grew up in Cape Town…home of the great white ❤️)
@Sheril need an estimate of how many humans kill humans to add to this small number by sharks— guns, war, vehicles, maskless.
@Sheril I'm surprised there are hundreds of millions of sharks to begin with!
@Sheril may we protect *and* fear them?

@Sheril

Exactly. We are the problem. We are the virus.

@Sheril and we need more pics of smiling #sharks. Nice one!
@Sheril Also, sharks are older than the Pleiades.
@Sheril Sharks are precious. Conserve them not just for a love of nature, but for a love of those delightfully pattable snoots.

@Sheril To lighten the mood: I'm doing my part, by protecting my BLÅHAJs.

But on a serious note, I wonder what can people actually do - is there something like Wren, but for marine life, where you can make donations for preservation?

@Sheril sharks need up their game they can do better than this
@Sheril I prefer sharks to crocodiles, who actually stand a chance of killing us on land
@Sheril Sharks help keep the oceans clean of rotting flesh.
@Sheril yes, but in my imagination they kill humans at a much higher rate. More so if I’m going to the beach.
@Sheril
Sharks are averse to human blood...unless provoked into a fight or nips at the wrong food
@Sheril if we had a news blurb every time a human killed a shark. Admit I do open water swimming and have a bit of fear, but like - I’m swimming through their foyer…
@Sheril absolutely! I am both terrified and absolutely amazed by sharks

@Sheril it makes me really sad that the main cause of shark deaths is the same as of all the other sea life that needs protecting: overfishing. people need to start realizing that "sustainable fishing" is a wishful-thinking myth and that we urgently need to stop consuming seafood :(

@Sheril they "won" evolution, became immune to cancer, pests and most genetic diseases, survived 100s of millions of years only to succumb to some primates with erectile dysfunction
@Sheril
I've seen experts call at least some species the most important fish in the sea
@MorpheusB
@Sheril I grew up around sharks. When one was sighted we got out of the water and did other beachy things, then got back into the water when it wandered away. I respect all wild animals. When I was 13, I came upon a group of baby hammerheads stranded in groups of tide pools. I saw a group of kids beating one to death. I moved as many as I could to safety as the tide was coming in. They were silky and smooth. They have more to fear from our brutality than we do from their instinct & hunger.
@Sheril A hundred MILLION? OMG! How are they killed or hunted? I had no idea.
@Sheril not to mention they eat sea turtles who destroy reefs, or so I'm told
@Sheril they are amazing creatures..
Many moons ago.. (1969) on holiday in Ireland hubby caught a Spur Dog (mini shark) it was pregnant and gave birth to life young. We could only return them to the sea, nothing else mattered at the time.
@Sheril unfortunately they won’t have much to eat since we already garnered most of their prey.
@Sheril Christ! Why are humans such c***s! We really don’t deserve to survive as a species. Taken as a whole we are abusive to our planet, it’s inhabitants, and each other. What hope do we have!
@Sheril Also, how many humans do humans kill each year?

@Sheril https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rr_T4Aim6Fw they're alright, honestly

they probably fear us more than we fear them

@Sheril And just think, sharks are some of the oldest animals currently living on the planet. And, we could drive them to extinction. While we as a species deserve our fate, none of the others deserve what we're doing to them.

@Sheril

The most shocking thing about that is that there's still 100 million sharks to kill each year! 🤔

@Sheril I knew shark fin harvesting was bad but I had no idea the scale of shark loss in our world until I saw Eli Roth on Whitney Cummings’ YouTube show. (It was all he could talk about, and there’s a good reason!) It’s *insane* that these ancient creatures are at risk of extinction out of a combination of greed and fear.
@Sheril If my math is right, that works out to more than three sharks killed by humans every SECOND.

@Sheril I'm privileged to swim in the ocean regularly. I'm even more privileged to swim in the ocean regularly with my kids. The idea that sharks are more of a threat than urban runoff that includes medical and industrial waste is a joke.

Protect our oceans.

@Sheril sharks will only eat you when you're wet
@Sheril
Sharks are truly amazing creatures 💙💙
@Sheril Peter Benchley, author of the book Jaws upon which of course the film franchise was based, felt so guilty about his role - through this creation & his other similar sensationalist literature - in encouraging the public’s excessive fear of sharks & the massive shark culls that followed the book & films that he devoted his later life to promoting ocean conservation & understanding of marine ecosystems 🙂
@Sheril
a happy-looking chap.
@Sheril have you not seen the Sharknado documentary series?
