SLURRY PITS: A ๐Ÿงต

A slurry pit is a lagoon or concrete structure where animal waste is collected with other unusable organic matter, such as water run-off from washing down dairies and factory farms.

It's hard not to just focus on the poor cows in this picture.

Look at this dead landscape

How many species thrive here?

Not even soil life can survive

This slurry slop then runs off into rivers causing aquatic life to suffocate.

500 marine locations are now recorded as dead zones globally, currently the size of the United Kingdomโ€™s surface. These dead zones are a toxic cocktail of agriculture runoff from slurry, pesticides, fertilizers, plastic and rotting marine life.

Animals also fall into slurry pits and there is no escape.

Countless wild animals fall in and disappear unnoticed.

Some slurry/waste pits are enormous especially in large feedlots.

All of this pollution enters the atmosphere and pollutes the water table which inevitably makes its way to the oceans.

@HillTopGina would I be right in thinking every little dot is a cow?

@rejoinEU

Yes sadly it is. I saw some of these huge images at an exhibition at the Turner Contemporary in Kent in 2018. I pointed out to a group of people that the dots were cows waiting to be killed and isn't it awful what we do to life and the environment, they sadly all turned on their heals and left. Hopefully they went away and thought more about things ๐Ÿ™

@HillTopGina Wow, it's too horrible. I'm 99.99% vegan these days and yet my son has gone into Oxford today and with his freedom to do so despite what I say, will no doubt end up in McDonalds the very kind of large volume factories those cows are destined for. Horrible.

@rejoinEU

Maybe challenge him to watch Earthlings Tony. That turned my mum vegan aged 78. She is 83 now and all her arthritis has cleared up.

Hi Keith. I cannot seem to work out what people reply to. So I don't know what you are saying fantastic to. Any tips on how to see this would be greatly appreciated   Thank you anyway

@HillTopGina Hi Gina :) I understand this challenge, I am using the Mastodon app, and I think the same-ish works on the web, but if you tap on the reply it should open that thread and reveal the post that was replied to.
In any event, I was commenting on your grandmother, or was it mother, that had gone vegan at 78!! Itโ€™s a great reinforcement for the โ€œitโ€™s never too lateโ€ argument.

@KeithTharp

Thank you. I have tried that and it doesn't seem to work on the app or laptop version ๐Ÿค”

The 78 year old woman was my mum and she feels so much better, she is now 83. I hear her on the phone advocating to relatives too now so she has become quite an activist ๐Ÿ˜‚

@HillTopGina OMG I wish you'd warned me. It's too much to witness. I forced myself to watch 35 minutes. How can humans be so utterly evil. My son is only 14 I can't expose him to that just yet. I might start him with 'Cow' on Amazon.
@rejoinEU I am so sorry Tony. It is very hard to watch but most who do never touch an animal product ever again ๐Ÿ’š
@HillTopGina and the animals are there in the brown squares๐Ÿ’”
Slurry gases includes methane, carbon monoxide, ammonia and hydrogen sulphide, all of which can create a risk to human and animal health. Some gases are flammable, others are toxic and some will displace oxygen from the air, causing a risk of asphyxiation.

Run off from farms is killing aquatic life and rendering waterways dead

Farm slurry is deadly.

@HillTopGina
Not to mention the Blood ponds at slaughter houses. Blood sprayed on fields contains toxins that enter the air and water. During floods these ponds typically get washed out into rivers..
@HillTopGina just imagine living in this wet poop 24/7๐Ÿ˜ญ
@T_hina I see it all the time up here in the Highlands T. Animals trying to shelter behind a fence post in driving rain with their feet in mud. ๐Ÿ˜”
@HillTopGina that's awful. When it comes to animals people don't even take notice or can. ๐Ÿ’”
