The Pleiades (also known as Messier 45 or The Seven Sisters) is an open star cluster. At about 444 light-years from Earth, it is the nearest Messier object.

@petekrz I once read that the Romans used the Pleiades as an eye test for serving in the army. If you could see the seven stars, you got to be an archer. If you couldn't, you got handed a pike.
