“People always say that I didn’t give up my seat because I was tired but that isn’t true. I was not tired physically… No, the only tired I was, was tired of giving in.”

#OnThisDay, 1 Dec 1955, Rosa Parks does not give up her seat on the bus for a white passenger, and is arrested. Although not the first black woman to be arrested Parks' refusal is a key moment in the American civil rights movement.

@CarveHerName @histodons One of my favourite quotations of all time. So simple.

@CarveHerName @histodons like if she wasn't physically tired the segregation of the bus would have been a millimeter closer to acceptable #not

Fascinating, because I remember being told this with the "she was tired" thing added for years.

@histodons @YusufToropov it’s a myth that tries to deny her agency as a political activist. She was secretary of the local NAACP and was trained in activism for workers rights and racial equality.
@CarveHerName @histodons … +++ … in-deed, all the plusses …
@CarveHerName @histodons The Civil Rights Movement wouldn't be possible without her.
@CarveHerName @histodons I love that the Little Caesar’s founder paid her rent for the rest of Rosa Parks’s life. That is walking the talk!

Immortalised too as asteroid 284996 Rosaparks (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/284996_Rosaparks) and featured at the close of the wonderful Dr Who episode "Rosa" which reminded us all of Rosa's life and contributions.
