It's nice that DEFRA have done a survey on ocean literacy (https://www.gov.uk/government/news/protecting-the-marine-environment-is-vital-say-public) but their definition is extraordinarily narrow. It's NOT ABOUT US. The ocean was there first, doing all sorts of things that build & maintain the planet we know. This self-centred approach is the wrong way to look at this. We are part of this planet, not the reason it exists. #Ocean #OceanLiteracy #Perspective

@helenczerski I agree with you. However, DEFRA is using the definition of #OceanLiteracy that was created more than 20 years ago. The OL research community is so small that we have not yet had scholars challenging this definition and expanding it. I have been waiting for that for 10 years!
